Giovanni Rovetta (* 1596 , † October 23, 1668 in Venice ) was a Venetian composer and singer of the Baroque.

Life

Giovanni Rovetta began his musical career as a boy soprano in St. Mark's Basilica , where his father was already active from 1605. There he was an instrumentalist from 1615 to 1617. On December 17, 1623 he was appointed bass cantor and on November 22, 1626, he was finally appointed vice conductor . Kapellmeister at the time was Claudio Monteverdi , who also taught Rovetta. Rovetta was also active in other areas of the Venetian musical life, so from 1635 he was maestro di musica at the Ospedale dei Dereletti (called Ospedaletto) and from 1639 at the Ospedale dei Mendicanti . As an ordained priest, he was a member of the Congregazione di S. Silvestro. Rovetta, called "Signor Rueti" , replaced Monteverdi in 1644 after he was defeated in the competition by Orazio Benevoli and Giovanni Battista Crivelli (around 1500-1652). He continued this office until his death in 1668. Vice-conductor at this time was his former student Natale Monferrato . His successor in the office of Kapellmeister was Francesco Cavalli .

Rovetta's nephew, Giovanni Battista Volpe , also called Rovettino, held various musical offices in the area of St. Mark's Basilica, he published and edited works by his uncle, namely Op. 9 and Op. 10.

The influence of Monteverdi can be seen in numerous compositions by Rovetta. An important impetus for Rovetta's career was provided in 1638 by the French ambassador in Venice, who commissioned Rovetta to deliver the music for the birth of the French heir to the throne Louis XIV . He then published his music collection Messa, e salmi concertati , which contains a mass , twelve Vespers and a Magnificat . He also published four motets and three madrigal collections . He also composed two operas that are now lost.
