Giovanni Salonia

Giovanni Salonia OFMCap (born July 27, 1947 in Ragusa , Sicily ) is an Italian Roman Catholic religious . In spring 2017 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Palermo , but refused to take over the office.

Life

Giovanni Salonia joined the Capuchin Order on September 29, 1962 and made his first profession on October 4 of the following year . After studying Catholic theology at orden own Studieninstitut he put on 1 November 1968, the perpetual profession from and received on 3 July 1971, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

After further studies, he obtained a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical University of Antonianum with a specialization in spirituality. He graduated from the Pontifical University of the Salesians with a degree in education and trained in Gestalt therapy at the Gestalt Training Center in San Diego .

From 1978 to 1981 he led the religious studies in Ragusa in his religious community. From 1980 to 1986 he was Provincial Definitor and from 1989 to 1991 Vicar Provincial of the Province of Syracuse of the Capuchin Order. As provincial minister from 1992 to 2001 and again from 2007 to 2010 he headed his religious province. In the years between the two terms of office he was superior in Modica , where he was also responsible for the further formation of the friars after the novitiate . After 2010 he was responsible for further training in the order province of Syracuse. In addition, he has been engaged as a lecturer in pastoral theology and psychotherapy at various institutes and universities for years.

On February 10, 2017 it appointed Pope Francis to the titular bishop of Buthrotum and Auxiliary Bishop of Palermo. On April 27 of the same year Salonias renunciation of episcopal ordination was announced. The background were allegations and rumors about Salonias way of life, which the latter rejected as unfounded.
