Gisbert Winnewisser

Gisbert Winnewisser (born September 7, 1936 in Karlsruhe ; † March 21, 2011 ) was a German astrophysicist.

Life

From 1972 to 1979 Winnewisser was a research associate at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn . In 1979 he became a professor at the University of Cologne and head of the I. Physics Institute. In 2001 he retired.

In 1995, Winnewisser and Rudolf Schieder received the Philip Morris Research Prize for the development of a sub-millimeter telescope with the world's best resolution, installed in the Cologne observatory for sub-millimeter astronomy on the Gornergrat near Zermatt . He also received the Max Planck Research Prize for International Cooperation and the University Medal of the University of Helsinki. He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, in the summer of 2006.
