Giulio Ascoli (mathematician)
Giulio Ascoli (born January 20, 1843 in Trieste , † July 12, 1896 in Milan ) was an Italian mathematician .
Ascoli finished studying mathematics at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa in 1868 . From 1872 he was professor of algebra and analysis at the Milan Polytechnic . In 1879 he became professor of mathematics at the Polytechnic in Turin (Reale Istituto Tecnico Superiore).
He was a corresponding member of the Milan Science Academy ( Istituto Lombardo ).
His main field were real functions and Fourier series. In 1884 he introduced equal continuity . The phrase by Arzelà-Ascoli can be traced back to him, also named after Cesare Arzelà , who expanded it in 1889. In this he proved the relative compactness (as was formulated later) of sets of equally continuous and uniformly bounded functions. This became a basis for the further development of functional analysis at Maurice Fréchet .
His son Guido Ascoli was also a well-known mathematician.
