history

Giuseppe Allamano's mother was the sister of St. Giuseppe Cafasso (1811-1860). Like his uncle before, he was born in what is now Castelnuovo Don Bosco. His priest uncle, whose baptismal name he was given and by whom he could also be baptized , exerted a great attraction from a young age . Allamano attended high school in the Salesian Oratory in Valdocco , where he had his first encounter with the later St. Don Bosco , who was his pastor and confessor .

He began studying philosophy and theology as a young candidate for the priesthood at the Turin seminary , where, in earlier years, his priest uncle was also active as Regens . He was ordained priest on September 20, 1873, and a short time later he was appointed spiritual (pastor and confessor) at the seminary in Turin. Again he succeeded his uncle, in 1880 he became church director of the Turin Marian shrine of the "Consolata" (comforter), he managed to build the church into the center of Marian devotion in the Archdiocese of Turin . Already at this time Giuseppe Allamano had the reputation of an excellent priest and his well-known wisdom served the well-being of the clergy .

The health of the young priest was not particularly good, which prevented him from putting his mission statement into practice, so he developed a mission plan. He set up an institute for secular priests, in which priests should prepare for world missions. This later gave rise to the wish that the young clergy should act in accordance with the gospel , namely according to the motto: “Go out into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to all creatures” Gospel according to Mark 16.15 EU . Finally, on June 16, 1901, under the direction and with the approval of the Archbishop of Turin, he founded the community of missionaries of the "Consolata" .

His last office was that of the cathedral capitular at Turin cathedral . He was considered a good and level-headed advisor for bishops , priests, religious and lay people . In this function he successfully campaigned for the beatification of his uncle Giuseppe Cafasso, who was beatified on May 3, 1925. Giuseppe Allamano died on February 15, 1926 and was buried in the chapel of the mother house of the Consolata missionaries.
