Giuseppe Cardinal Callegari (born November 4, 1841 in Venice , Italy , † April 14, 1906 in Padua ) was Bishop of Padua .

Life

Giuseppe Callegari studied at the University of Venice , the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology . He received the sacrament of ordination on March 26, 1864 and then worked as a professor of moral theology at the Patriarchal Seminary in Venice and as a parish priest . In 1878 he also took on the role of advisor at the diocesan court. He wrote numerous articles for the newspaper "Il Veneto Cattolico".

In 1880 Pope Leo XIII appointed him . to the Bishop of Treviso . He received the episcopal ordination on May 9th of the same year by the Patriarch of Venice , Domenico Agostini . Co- consecrators were Giovanni Maria Berengo , Bishop of Mantua and Giuseppe Apollonio , Bishop of Adria . In 1882 Leo XIII appointed him. as Papal Assistant to the Throne and Bishop of Padua. In 1892 he declined the appointment as Patriarch of Venice , and proposed instead his longtime friend Giuseppe Sarto, who later became Pope Pius X before. From 1893 Giuseppe Callegari was president of the Catholic Scientific Society of Italy. Pope Pius X accepted him on November 9, 1903 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin pro hac vice in the college of cardinals . Giuseppe Cardinal Callegari died on April 14, 1906 in Padua and was buried in the shrine of d'Arcella there.
