Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda
Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda (born February 10, 1834 in Capua , † January 31, 1911 in Palermo ) was an Italian architect and engineer of the 19th century.
Life
The architect came from a Palermitan aristocratic family. As a child he was trained to use weapons, but after the revolution of 1848 he went to Naples to study mathematics and figurative drawing. He studied painting with Giuseppe Mancinelli. 1849 met the architect Errico Alvino through the architect Antonio Cipolla. In 1859 he graduated from the Scuola di Applicazione degli ingegneri di Ponti e Strade (today's Facoltà di Ingegneria of the University of Naples ). In 1860 he received his first award as an architect in Florence .
In Sicily , Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda first built railway lines for the Corpo del Genio Civile , but then turned back to architecture. In 1863 he received his doctorate on the basis of his publications at the University of Palermo and in the same year he was appointed engineer for the municipality of Palermo, where he worked under Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile . He was a professor at the Technical Institute (Istituto Tecnico), and since 1879 professor at the University of Palermo .

Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda realized the Teatro Politeama in Palermo in 1879 , for which he was awarded the gold medal of the Congresso degli Ingegnieri e Architetti, the construction of a mausoleum for Vincenzo Florio and a castle for his son on the island of Favignana in the Moorish style, the Aula Grande in the Archivio Storico Comunale di Palermo , the Palazzo Pretorio in Palermo, as well as tombs for Ruggero Settimo and Mariano Stabile , coffee houses in the Villa Giulia in Palermo and the Grand Hotel delle Palme in Termini Imerese .
Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda wrote several monographs and writings on the subjects of light and shadow, perspective and textbooks for students.
