Giuseppe Maria Tomasi (born September 12, 1649 in Alicata (today: Licata ) in Sicily , † January 1, 1713 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church . In liturgical literature he is usually listed as JM Thomasius , following the Latin tradition .

Life

Tomasi came from the house of the princes of Lampedusa . As a teenager, he joined the Order of Theatines one, put in 1666 his religious vows , and received in 1673 in Rome, the ordination . The main focus of his theological work was liturgy research .

From 1704 he took over under Pope Clement XI. important ecclesiastical offices, including the office of consultor to the Congregation for Rites and the Congregation for Indulgences and Holy Relics . Shortly before his death in 1712, Tomasi was made cardinal.

Aftermath

1803 Giuseppe Maria Tomasi was beatified, took place on 12 October 1986 in the Vatican Basilica the canonization by Pope John Paul II. His resting place Tomasi initially found in his titular church San Martino ai Monti , however, was in 1971 in the Roman-theatine church Sant ' Andrea della Valle reburied.
