Gladesville

Gladesville is a suburb of Sydney in Australia . It is located 9 km northwest of Sydney city center and belongs to the Local Government Area Ryde City and Hunter's Hill Municipality in the northern suburbs of Sydney.

Gladesville is known for its riverside views and bush plantations along the Parramatta River . The Gladesville Bridge , a landmark of Sydney that connects the northern suburbs with the western inner city, takes its name from this suburb.

history

When colonization from Europe began in 1795 with a free surrender of land to the convicted artist John Doody , the area was initially called Doody's Bay . Other settlers in the area included William House (1795), Ann Benson (1796) and Charles Raven (1799). In 1836 the released convict John Glade was registered as the owner of the land by John Doody, which he had acquired in 1817. Glade increased his holdings by buying neighboring lands. After his death in 1848, his land was sold to Mr. W. Billyard, a Sydney solicitor , who then divided it into parcels and sold it on in November 1855 under the name of Gladesville.

A milestone in the development of the suburb was the settlement of the Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum in 1838 on the banks of the Parramatta River. It was the first purpose-built psychiatric hospital in New South Wales . The building was largely designed by the colonial architect Mortimer Lewis and built in 1836-1838. In 1869 it was renamed Gladesville Hospital for the Insane and in 1915 Gladesville Mental Hospital . In 1993 it was merged with Macquarie Hospital to form Gladesville Macquarie Hospital . In 1997, the inpatient departments were merged into Macquarie Hospital in North Ryde . The Gladesville complex consists of many of the buildings listed on the Australian Register of National Monuments.

One of the hospital's acquisitions was a two-story sandstone building called The Priory on Salter Street. It was built in the 1840s, probably by the Stubbs family, and had an east facade in the Georgian style and a west facade with a gable and a painted sundial . In the 1850s it had been sold to the Marist Fathers , who had an influence on the early development of Hunters Hill . The hospital bought the building in 1888 and in 1978 it was added to the Australian Register of National Monuments.

Another historic landmark is the Siedlerhof rocking where the poet Banjo Paterson in 1870er- and 1880s lived. Built around 1850, it is still well preserved today and is open to the public in Banjo Patterson Park on Punt Road. He is also listed on the Australian Register of National Monuments.
