Coordinates: 33 ° 49 ′ S , 151 ° 0 ′ E Parramatta City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . Parramatta belongs to the metropolis of Sydney , the capital of New South Wales. The area is 61 km² and has about 226,000 inhabitants.

Parramatta is located in Outer Sydney, a direct extension of the harbor, around 20 km from the city center. The area includes 50 neighborhoods: Blaxcell, Camellia, North Chester Hill, Clyde, Clyde Junction, Dellwood, Dundas, Dundas Valley, Dundas West, Ermington, East Granville, Granville North, South Granville, Guildford East, Kingsdene, May Villa, Model Farms , Lake Parramatta, Parramatta East, Parramatta Park, West Parramatta, Parramatta Westfield, Rosehill, Rydalmere, Telopea, Toongabbie East, Old Toongabbie, North Wentworthville, Winston Hills and parts of Baulkham Hills, Carlingford, Eastwood, Eastwood Heights, Epping , Epping West , Granville, Guildford, Guildford North, Harris Park, Melrose Park, Merrylands, Northmead, Oatlands, Parramatta, Parramatta North, Pendle Hill, Sefton, Toongabbie, Wentworthville and Westmead. The council's administrative headquarters are located in the Parramatta district in the center of the LGA.
history
In 1788 the first settlement was founded in what is now Parramatta. In 1855, New South Wales' first railway line was built between Sydney and Parramatta. The present suburb of Sydney was at that time an important center of agriculture. In 1861 the place received the status of a municipality. In 1867 the Borough of Parramatta was founded and in 1938 the municipality was granted city rights.
Culture and sights
Worth seeing are the ten hectare Lake Parramatta , the ferry terminal (Ferry Wharf), the Macarthur Girls High School (opened in 1934) and Church Street with St John's Anglican Cathedral, St John's Cemetery and the Town Hall.
Near Parramatta Stadium is Parramatta Park with the Old Government House, the former seat of the Governor of New South Wales.
There are several bridges in the city area: Barry Wilde (Wilde St) Bridge, Elizabeth St Pedestrian Bridge, Gasworks Bridge (Macarthur St), James Ruse Drive Bridge and Lennox Bridge (Church St).
The Sydney Observatory is also worth a visit . It was founded in 1822 by Thomas Brisbane . The Scottish- born astronomer James Dunlop also worked there . There he was Charles Rümker's assistant . In 1831 he took over the position of director, which he held until 1847. The observatory was in operation until 1855.
At the Parramatta River is the government and commercial center, also known as Sydney's "second central business district" means. Westfield Parramatta, one of the largest shopping centers in the country, is located there. You can shop in 560 shops on five floors and a sales area of 126,754 square meters.
Sports
Parramatta is home to the Parramatta Eels , a rugby league team of the Australian National Rugby League . The club dominated the league in the 1980s when it was able to enter its only four championships at that time. Peter Sterling is considered the most important player in the club's history. The Eels play at Parramatta Stadium .
The football club Parramatta Power became national runner-up in 2004, but the club, where André Gumprecht , formerly SG Wattenscheid 09 , and later Bundesliga professional Michael Beauchamp also played, has since gone bankrupt. Founded in 1956 by Maltese immigrants, the Parramatta Eagles was often top notch in previous years, but now only plays in the top division of New South Wales. The Western Sydney Wanderers from the national top A-League have been playing at Parramatta Stadium since 2012.

Parramatta City Council has 15 members elected by the residents of the five wards (three each from Arthur Phillip, Caroline Chisholm, Elizabeth Macarthur, Lachlan Macquarie, and Woodville Ward). These five districts are defined independently of the localities. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
