Parramatta is located in Outer Sydney, a direct extension of the harbor, around 20 km from the city center. history

In 1788 the first settlement was founded in what is now Parramatta. In 1855, New South Wales' first railway line was built between Sydney and Parramatta. The present suburb of Sydney was at that time an important center of agriculture. In 1861 the place received the status of a municipality. In 1867 the Borough of Parramatta was founded and in 1938 the municipality was granted city rights.

Culture and sights

Worth seeing are the ten hectare Lake Parramatta , the ferry terminal (Ferry Wharf), the Macarthur Girls High School (opened in 1934) and Church Street with St John's Anglican Cathedral, St John's Cemetery and the Town Hall.

Near Parramatta Stadium is Parramatta Park with the Old Government House, the former seat of the Governor of New South Wales.

Parramatta is home to the Parramatta Eels , a rugby league team of the Australian National Rugby League . Parramatta City Council has 15 members elected by the residents of the five wards (three each from Arthur Phillip, Caroline Chisholm, Elizabeth Macarthur, Lachlan Macquarie, and Woodville Ward).
