Equivalent assessment of student performance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An equivalent assessment of student performance ( GFS ) is a type of performance assessment in the school system of Baden-Württemberg . An individual performance achieved by the student independently during the school year is assessed. The provision of the equivalent service is regulated in Section 9, Paragraph 5 of the ordinance of the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs on the formation of grades (Grade Formation Ordinance, NVO) of May 5, 1983, last change taken into account: Sections 5, 11 and 11a changed and Sections 9b and 11b newly inserted by Article 2 of the Ordinance of 26 July 2019 (Journal of Laws p. 349, 350, KuKS 169).

According to this, the following can be provided as equivalent: a written term paper, an annual paper, a project (including experimental work in the natural sciences), a freelance work, a presentation, an oral examination, possibly also scheduled outside of the lesson time, or another presentation.

In everyday school life and student jargon, the usage of the phrase "hold a GFS" has become established, as if the student were making a statement himself and not doing something. In the catalogs of requirements and implementation regulations published by numerous schools and even by seminars on the internet, the abbreviation "GFS" is used as synonymous with "equivalent performance". There are schools that limit the possible equivalent services mentioned in §9 of the NVO, which appears legally questionable. In principle, it is possible to provide an equivalent performance in any subject, including sports. At some schools, the terms "are Equivalent performance assessment " ( GLF ), " Additional Learning Performance " ( ZL or Z-LL ) " Equivalent Student Performance " ( GSL ), " housework with presentation " ( HAp ) or " General learning power " ( AL ) used .

Linguistically, GFS is an acronym that is spelled out and pronounced with final emphasis: [ɡe ɛf 'ɛs]. As Backronym "JRC" has already experienced the following reinterpretations " G Anze F amily s chuftet" or " G Anze F amily s chafft", " G num f hese S ache" and " G Ross-scale F Olter of S chülern".

Originally, the equivalent performance of which was reform of the upper secondary school for school year 2002/2003 only for the course level of the school introduced. In the course of the educational reform in Baden-Württemberg for the 2004/2005 school year, it is also required in secondary and secondary schools from grade 8 and in grammar schools from grade 7. In some cases, teachers, student councils or schools set extensive and meticulous specifications for the equivalent performance, up to and including the definition of the font, font size and line spacing for the publication accompanying the oral lecture to be created with word processing.

In the 2019/2020 school year, the requirement for students to complete a certain number of GFS has been suspended.

Explanation

The aim of the JRC is to encourage independent work as well as methodological and media skills in the students. A GFS can take several forms: presentations , written assignments , projects (e.g. experimental work ), oral exams or other forms of presentation .

In general education high schools , a presentation is usually expected that can best be compared with a school lesson under the direction of the lecturing student. The use of media is often required, such as overhead projectors , a presentation shown via video projector , short film excerpts, posters and blackboard letters. After completion of the GFS, the grading takes place, whereby what is seen and heard is briefly discussed in the class.

The individual conditions are determined by the teacher. For example, the given duration of a lecture varies between a few minutes and several school hours.

Rating and number

Each student is required to have the following number of GFS:

  • in grades 8 and 9 of Hauptschule and Realschule : one GFS per school year
  • In grades 7–11 of the eight- and nine-year grammar school or grades 7-10 of the eight-year grammar school : at least one GFS per school year
  • in the course level of the Gymnasium (12/13 in G9 or 11/12 in G8): three GFS in both school years together ( up to the school year 2004/2005 four GFS were required, but this number was reduced to three, so that one GFS can be held every six months, with no JRC to the upcoming in "course level 2, the second half of the year" baccalaureate must be kept )

A fourth GFS can be taken voluntarily in the upper secondary school .

The weighting of a GFS corresponds to that of an exam and is counted as part of the written part of the overall grade. In the vocational high schools , a class test can be replaced by a GFS at the decision of the subject teacher.

Evidence of performance that is not provided or is not provided on time will be assessed as a refusal of performance and with the grade insufficient (6.0) in the respective subject. If no subject in which the GFS is to take place has been entered in the class register by a date set by the respective class teacher, the teacher may choose a subject in which to assign the grade.

criticism

Media literate students can often benefit from the JRC. Therefore, these are often also taken in one of their weaker subjects to improve the grade.

Through the GFS, the ability can be learned to be able to present content in a given framework, which can be useful in studies and at work. It also helps students to prepare for scientific work during their studies.

The officially compulsory participation in the presentation of a GFS is viewed critically. Students who are not interested in a specific topic will be forced to study the topic with the JRC. As a result, students usually do not learn for their future life or out of interest in the material, but only for the grade and the associated status, which in turn promotes bulimia learning .

Students at home have different requirements for preparing a GFS. In addition, certain behaviors are encouraged in the preparation and presentation of a GFS , while others are inhibited. These thus provoke opportunity inequality.

It has been criticized that the preparation of a GFS can lead to a disproportionately high workload for students, for example in the case of demanding topics, deficits in planning, time pressure or knowledge gaps.

The state student council in Baden-Württemberg criticizes in its basic program that there is often a lack of "uniform evaluation criteria" within schools. This leads to "considerable differences in the requirements and the assessment" of a GFS. The regional student council therefore calls for a legal obligation for schools to set uniform minimum standards for each subject group.
