history
Glen Burnie was founded in 1812 by a district attorney named Elias Glenn near what is now Harlem Park in Baltimore. He initially gave the newly founded settlement the name Glennsburne. In the course of time, when the land was passed on to his descendants, the name changed to "Glennsbourne Farm" and finally to Glenburnie. In 1854 William Wilkins Glenn founded the Curtis Creek Mining, Furnace and Manufacturing Co., whose business was very successful. So the Glenns managed to acquire a large area of land in Anne Arundel County . After the death of William Wilkins Glenn, the land was divided between his brother, son and nephew. Glenburnie officially became part of the State of Maryland in 1888. Since then, the place has grown continuously. The first school building was opened in 1899, and the first church building followed in 1904.
In 1930 the name was changed to Glen Burnie at the suggestion of Post Office Manager Louis J. de Alba. The Glen Burnie Mall opened in 1962 and the Marley Station shopping center opened in the mid-1980s. In 1965, Glen Burnie got its own hospital, which today has 270 beds.
