Gloor is a family name from the Seetal in the canton of Aargau .

Name development

Around 1440 the name Glares, Glarer, Glaren was written. Around 1500 the name Glor was written, later the name transformed differently, depending on the community into which the gender branched; in Dürrenäsch first Glar, then Glaar, then Gloor; Birrwil / Schwaderhof / Seengen first Glar, then Glor, then Gloor. From the 15th century, the family branched out. One line Seengen / Birrwil and one line continue from Dürrenäsch.

origin of the name

Through a marriage connection between knight Rudolf von Glarus and Anna von Liebegg , half of the castle and the fiefdom went to Rudolf (1318-1371), where he retired after 1350 during his exile due to participating in the conspiracy against the guild regiment of Zurich. All goods and rights were sold out under his sons Johannes and Jacob.

history

Rudolf von Glarus , Jacob's son, is named the Hallwyler's first minister . Rudolf from Chulmbe (Liebegg) lived in the castle tower of Seengen, after which the family members were named until they were enfeoffed with the Retterswil farms, where the Gloor sat in the 14th and 15th centuries.

The connection is also given by the fact that Rudolf's sister, Margarethe in der Burg, was married to Heinrich Ribi von Platzheim, from another well-respected family of Seengen (Ribi was mayor of Lenzburg). The Ribi family later a fief Share (another part belonged to the von Hallwyl / part was Freigut the glar) this savior Wiler yards in 1356 to the monastery Königsfelden sold.

In the 15th century, Glar von Burg were called Im Taufkreis Seengen. The connection with the family who lived in the Hallwyl Tower in Seengen and served as ministers of the Hallwil family is close. Around 1400 these are no longer mentioned in the documents as "those in the castle", with the exception of Uli von Birrwil / Burg and later Johannis von Birrwil / Burg. All Gloor von Birrwil were baptized in Seengen at this time.

The modification of the name Glarus in Glarner, Glarer, Glaren, Glar, Glor corresponds to the time sequence of the mentions. This assumption that the von Glarus are one with the family in the castle and then with the Glar, Glaren etc. is underpinned by the constant repetition of the same first name in all three name forms, since at this time the children always look for the first name of the fathers or Grandfathers were named.

It is significant that the Gloor family continued to be under-governors of Hallwyl and Liebegg for centuries.

Family today

The line in the Seetal was prosperous and the first migration can only be observed in the 19th century. The Dürrenäsch line was impoverished early on (in the 16th century). Almost all emigrants to Russia (Crimea), Australia, Chile and the USA come from this line.
