Gloria is a German pop song by Joachim Witt from 2012. It was written by Joachim Witt, Michelle Leonard, Mirko Schaffer and Mario "Malo" Wesser. The music video for the song sparked controversy. Joachim Witt describes this song as the third milestone in his work after Goldene Reiter and Die Flut . These three songs reflected his life.
Song content
The song tells about how the world has changed and how the singer searches for love for God and does not find it for himself.
Music video
The music video was directed by Specter , a director who has already shot music videos for Sido and Bushido , which have also been described as brutal.
In the video itself, a procession can be seen, which is led by a Catholic priest (played by Joachim Witt). As a contrast to this, a war zone is shown in which several Bundeswehr soldiers rape a woman . At that moment a little girl observes this scene and is murdered shortly afterwards. One of the soldiers stands outside and turns into an angel with black wings and soars into the sky. In addition, fishermen are shown picking up poisoned fish in the oil-contaminated sea and catching a black angel. A monk is also shown going up a mountain to scourge himself on a cross and then transforming himself into an angel with black wings. In addition, the pilgrimage stops at a lake and goes down to the pastor in the lake, while the statue of the Madonna weeps bloody tears. Joachim Witt describes the disappearance of the participants in the procession as subtlety.
This music video was heavily criticized by the Bundeswehr because of the rape scene. Ulrich Kirsch said the following about this:
“ With all artistic freedom: The video vilifies German soldiers in a tasteless way. […] Ironically, those who have been holding their heads for this country for years and who have prevented such scenarios in the Balkans, for example, are equated with brutal violent criminals here. "
He also called on people to express their displeasure with this video on the Internet. This video triggered a shit storm that went so far that Joachim Witt received death threats .
Joachim Witt apologized for the hurt feelings and said the following about the Shitstorm:
“ I am a German artist - we live in a democracy. Does this mean that Mr Kirsch from the Bundeswehr can officially call for a 'Shit Storm'? I am just shocked! It is absurd to see yourself exposed to censorship in your freedom as an artist with the intention of being silenced at the push of a button from the Bundeswehr generals hill. Since when do artists in Germany have to be afraid of the army again and flee their homes? "
Another reaction was that the federal government submitted an application to the federal inspection agency for media harmful to minors for the music video to be indexed . In an assessment, the lawyer Udo Vetter doubted the correctness of a possible indexing, since the video is not harmful to young people and the representation of the Bundeswehr soldiers falls under artistic freedom .
In the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Witt also spoke about the fact that before the video was produced, research was carried out which found that there are "around 80 cases of sexual assault, some of them rape," in which Bundeswehr soldiers can be shown to have been involved. At the end of August 2012, the Bundeswehr actually reported that since 2007 there had been a total of 395 cases of violations of the right to sexual self-determination in which at least one member of the Bundeswehr was involved. According to the Armed Forces Commissioner Hellmut Königshaus, sexual abuse is said to have been the exception, which he was unable to verify. In 2011, 78 cases were reported, over half of the respective proceedings, but were dropped because the allegations were either untenable or simply lacking sufficient evidence.
On October 25, 2012, it became known that the federal inspection agency had classified the video as not harmful to minors.
