Goa Gil , actually Gilbert Levey , (* 11 October 1951 in San Francisco , California ) is an American goa and psytrance - DJ , producer and organizer of festivals and open-air parties . He is considered the founder of the Full Moon Parties on the beaches of Anjuna and Vagator in the Indian state of Goa . These were the namesake of the subsequent Goa festivals and the music style of the same name.

Life

Goa Gil was born in San Francisco, California and grew up in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood . In the 1960s he grew into the hippie movement that had developed there. In San Francisco he played in various bands including The Family Dogg and Sons of Champlin . In September 1969 at the age of 18 he first moved to Amsterdam in the Netherlands and then emigrated to India , where he arrived in February 1970. He was part of a movement with which thousands of hippie trail travelers , mostly former hippies, settled in the state of Goa. There he met several sadhus and also became a sadhu under the guidance of guru Saraswati Ji Maharaj . At that time he was called Baba Mangalanand. In the 1970s, Goa Gil and friends bought instruments from the flea market. He played in various acid rock bands such as B. The Anjuna Jam Band and The Big Dipper Band and worked as a DJ. He put on different styles of music, but always tried to unite the individual songs into a kind of story. Between the late 1970s and early 1980s, Goa Gil was inspired by electronic music from bands like Yello , Portion Control , Chakk , and Kraftwerk .

In 1985 he met Ariane MacAvoy, also a producer of psytrance and DJ who works and performs under the name Nimba, in Goa, with whom he lives. Ariane's interest in traditional West African music, primarily the Djembé , had a strong influence on the concept of Gil's Dj sets. In 1989 Gil and Ariane founded the live act Kode IV together with the two German producers Hans Schiller and Peter Ziegelmeier . In the same year, the first album called "Possessed" was released on KK Records . In total, the band released one tape , seven singles and five albums. Including a DJ mix by Goa Gil, recorded live at the Burning Man Festival in the Black Rock Desert , USA 1998.

Gil bought his own musical equipment with a few friends and started throwing open-air parties with them on Anjuna Beach and, soon after, on Vagator Beach in Goa. There electronic music was played, which was influenced by exotic-oriental sounds. This was either produced by himself or among others by Goa Gil, who preferred to play music there as a DJ from the start. An event could stretch over several days. These parties became known internationally as the Full Moon Party or Full Moon Festival from the beginning of the 1990s, especially among backpackers from Israel and Europe. These parties in Goa are considered to be the first psytrance festivals, which are now colloquially called Goa festivals. The music styles Psytrance and Goa, which have developed from Acid Techno and Hardtrance , also emerge from these festivals .
