A branch in Hillsboro, Oregon .

The company's first restaurant opened in 1973 in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. In the early 1970s, William Theisen owned the Wild Willie's beer pub, which was next to a pizzeria called Godfather's in Omaha. The pizzeria owner, Jerry Forte, sold the business to Theisen in 1974 and now owns the Godfather of East Hanover franchise restaurant . Theisen began selling franchise licenses after acquiring the company. In the mid-1980s Theisen sold Godfather's to Pillsbury and stepped down from active management of the company. In 1986, Herman Cain was hired as CEO of the fast food chain, which at the time was on the verge of bankruptcy. Cain and Ronald B. Gartlan, the company's executive vice president , formed a group to buy the brand from Pillsbury, which they did through a leveraged acquisition in early 1990 . Although Godfather's was no longer the third largest pizza chain in the United States, as it was in 1985, but was in fifth place, a sales total of $ 100 million was reported. At the same time Pantera's Pizza bought up many Godfather's restaurants. With the loss of thousands of jobs, around 200 restaurants were closed under the leadership of Cain, which brought Godfather's back into the black. In 1996, Cain stepped down as CEO and Gartlan took over leadership. Cain remained CEO until 2002 when he was bought out by Gartlan in 2009. According to the company's official website, in 2015 there were 571 restaurants in 36 countries. Godfather's Pizza has several take- aways at Speedway gas stations, most Minit Mart convenience stores in Kentucky, northern Tennessee, and some of the TravelCenters of America highway rest stops .
