The Goethe School (formerly Emperor Franz Joseph's School for Girls ) has been a listed building in Bolzano since 1985 .

The Goetheschule, a primary school with German as the language of instruction, is located opposite the Franziskanergymnasium on Marienplatz. It was built in 1908 as a primary and community school for girls and named in honor of the 60th anniversary of the reign of the Austrian Emperor, the Kaiser-Franz-Joseph School. School operations began on November 14, 1908. At the opening, the Wiener Zeitung wrote the interesting sheet :

“With the establishment of a new girls' school, Bozen has overtaken most of the Austrian cities, if not all. ... The city of Bolzano spent almost half a million crowns on the construction of the Franz Joseph Girls' School, which rises in Vintlerstrasse and is available to the builders, city architects, furriers, builders Weber, the advisory board of the meat district school inspector, the community, the tradespeople and artists does all honor. "

The monumental school building represents a high point of the building program of the German-free mayor of Bozen, Julius Perathoner . The plan by city architect Wilhelm Kürschner was based on the example of the Munich school building and the then new concept of the work school . Albert Stolz framed the ceilings in the stairwell and some doors to the classrooms with wreaths of alpine flowers and small animals; the walls he decorated with different lithography -Rahmenbildern with motifs from fairy tales and folk songs , landscapes or other youth stimulating objects.

During fascism , as part of the Italianization measures , the school became the Italian- speaking Adelaide Cairoli School. The fascist regime also dismissed founding director Emma von Leurs, who then became involved in the South Tyrolean catacomb school .

In the Marienpark in front of the school there has been a Marian column made in 1893 by the sculptor Andreas Kompatscher since 1909 .
