The building is located at Goldstrasse 25 on the corner of Schmalen Strasse in the northern part of Quedlinburg's old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . There are seven holiday apartments in the house , which are managed by the Quedlinburg Hotel Theopano.

history

The residential building registered in the Quedlinburg monument register was built on a high square plinth as a half-timbered house in the period around 1820. The house has a cellar with barrel vaults that probably dates back to the second half of the 17th century and comes from a previous building. In 1884, the owner Hermann Kulp expanded the house. For longer periods of time, the building housed a pawnshop and then a thermometer factory . From 1935 to 1937 a building in the courtyard of the property, which was demolished in the 1990s, was used as a prayer room by the Quedlinburg Jewish community . In 1938 it was auctioned off and came into the possession of the Stadtsparkasse . From 1943 it was again in private ownership and was used as a private residence.

The building fabric deteriorated considerably. In 1994 a first refurbishment attempt was unsuccessful. Ultimately, the house stood empty and fell into disrepair. It was then taken over by the German Foundation for Monument Protection in 2000 . From autumn 2001 it became the first property to be the sole project of a youth building hut . Up until 2007, the participants in the youth construction hut carried out a monument-friendly and environmentally friendly renovation under the professional guidance of the German Half-timbered Center in Quedlinburg . At least six young people worked on the property each time, and they often completed a voluntary year in monument conservation . The participants came from Germany, but some also came from Japan , Russia and France . First, the building was uncovered and measured. It was important to note that the deformations that occurred in the building in the past as a result of previous alterations will not be further increased by the current construction work. The measurements also recorded the deformations that occurred exactly. In some rooms there was a height difference of 0.53 meters over a length of 4 meters. In the course of the work, the height difference was reduced to 0.15 meters.

At the same time, the building history of the house was examined, which was used to plan the renovation work and the building materials to be used. The newly planned floor plan was based on old solutions from the 19th century and included the existing half-timbered walls.

This was followed by stonemasonry and carpentry work, but also earth building and work from the joinery and painting trade. In particular, the historic windows were renovated and refurbished. Both wooden and tile floors were laid. The floor on the first floor was insulated with expanded clay . The outer walls received internal insulation by means of a wall shell made of light earth bricks. The distance between this wall and the half-timbered wall was filled with clay .

Double- sashed frame windows with transom and double-sash skylight serve as windows . In the cellar of the house, a few baroque four-wing frame windows, probably from the previous building, could be found. The old single windows were converted to box windows . Some windows still contain the original rolled glass. Baroque doors formerly located in the building were found in a depot, which were refurbished and reinserted.

The hall as the entrance area of the house was restored after the restoration findings and provided with the original wall designs from the beginning of the 20th century. The wooden stairs were restored according to their construction from the 19th century.

The youth construction hut project Goldstrasse 25 was part of the International Building Exhibition Urban Redevelopment 2010 in Saxony-Anhalt . In February 2007 it was handed over to the foundation acting as the client. The foundation made € 813,000 available for the renovation. In the presence of the State Transport Minister Karl-Heinz Daehre and the Minister of Culture Jan-Hendrik Olbertz and the Secretary General of the Monument Protection Foundation, Robert Knüppel , an official handover took place on October 15, 2007.

The two-storey half-timbered building was built during the transition from Baroque to Classicism . The facade design shows classicist features and was probably originally plastered, so that its external appearance resembles a building made of stone. Other information speaks of plastering during a major renovation in the 19th century, in which the ground floor was placed in line with the previously overhanging upper floor and the beam heads were also sawed off. At the end of the 20th century, however, it was not plastered, but was given a multi-layer lime plaster and a light color when it was renovated in accordance with the listed buildings. At the same time, however, external insulation of two centimeter thick reed mats was added. As was customary with half-timbered buildings at that time, the posts of the truss had no structural function. In contrast to older half-timbered houses, the upper floor of the house does not protrude towards the street. The sandstone plinth of the house has two shells. The outer sandstone layer was added during the renovation in the 19th century and had to be partially renewed during the renovation at the beginning of the 21st century.
