The Gulf of San Jorge between the Argentine provinces of Chubut and Santa Cruz is a wide semicircular indentation of the Argentine Sea in the Patagonian territory, 80 nautical miles (148 km) deep and 132 nautical miles (244 km) wide at its opening.

It is crossed in the north by Cape Dos Bahías (coordinates: 44 ° 55 ′ 0 ″  S , 65 ° 31 ′ 0 ″  W ) and in the south by Cape Tres Puntas (coordinates: 47 ° 6 ′ 0 ″  S , 65 ° 51 ′ 0 ″  W ) limited; the marine middle of this large Gulf located at the coordinates: 45 ° 59 '  S , 66 ° 41'  W .

Its depth varies between 73 and 101 meters. Its north coast is full of cliffs and has numerous coves protected from the southwest winds (Leones, San Roque, Horno, Inglesa, Córdova, Malaspina, Visser, Olivares, Olivia), bays (Bustamante, Solano) and streams.

The whole coastal region is an area where the construction of ports is difficult because of the wide range of tides , frequent winds and the lack of fresh water on the surface. Nevertheless, thanks to the abundance of fish and the occurrence of hydrocarbons , deep water harbors and loading and unloading systems have been laid across buoys.

In the far west of the Gulf is the city of Comodoro Rivadavia , an overseas and fishing port .

The town of Caleta Olivia in Santa Cruz is on its banks and is the seat of an important oil center in the region with a canal for the shipping of crude oil .

The port of Caleta Paula is so far ( 2007 ) the last in the development of this area.

Rada Tilly is the main seaside resort on its coasts.

tourism

The attractions of the seaside resort Rada Tilly include:

These reserves are rich in bird species ( penguins , albatrosses , cormorants , gulls , etc.), seals ( elephant seals , sea lions , harbor seals ), their waters are rich in fish ( tuna ) and especially whales such as the southern right whale and the orca . In the continental zones of the above-mentioned reserves, the guanacos , Andean jackals and rheas of the subspecies Darwin's rhea should be emphasized.

The basin of the Gulf of San Jorge

The Gulf of San Jorge, caused by tectonic subsidence movements, includes a geological formation that extends to the south of the province of Chubut and to the north of the province of Santa Cruz, as well as on the seabed. This geological basin is the result of the alternation between periods of sea retreat with continental sedimentation and sea advance with sea sedimentation for millions of years, which has created underground deposits of non-renewable fossil hydrocarbons (petroleum and natural gas ). The gas production is delivered to Gran Buenos Aires via gas pipelines ; the oil production in this basin is mainly transported by tanker . The oil production in this basin is the oldest in Argentina. When this fuel was discovered by chance in 1901 while a well was being bored to supply the then small nest Comodoro Rivadavia with water, the importance it assumed led to the fact that a short time later the Argentine state company YPF ( Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales ) and created the Comodoro Rivadavia military zone as a political department during the Second World War .

The main deposits of the Gulf of San Jorge basin are located in the vicinity of the towns of Comodoro Rivadavia, Caleta Olivia, Caleta Córdova , Pico Truncado and Las Heras .
