Gonium is a species of green algae from the Chlorophyceae class that occursin freshwater.
description
Gonium forms plate-shaped, square cell colonies of 4 to 16 cells. These colonies arise when a mother cell divides, with the daughter cells forming a new colony through loose connections. Each cell in these colonies is also individually viable and, separately from the original colony, can divide and form a new colony again. Each cell resembles Chlamydomonas , a unicellular species of algae. Since the cells lie together on a gelatinous plate, an exchange of substances between them is possible. The individual cells are not differentiated, but are able to perform together, such as swimming in one direction. Gonium is found in ponds, swamps, and puddles. Like all plants (except for Chlamydomonas, which is also capable of heterotrophic nutrition), these cells feed themselves autotrophically .
Gonium pectorale , the mosaic green alga, often occurs in poorly eutrophicated ponds in warmer seasons.
Species of gonium are also used to classify the water quality according to the saprobic system . Mass developments of gonium can be observed in heavily polluted waters of quality class III (α-mesosa samples) .
