Google Photos ( english Google Photos ) is an online service of the US company Google LLC for storing pictures and videos . He was the successor of photo functions in Google's social network Google+ on 28 May 2015, the scope of the Google I / O available. On February 12, 2016, Google announced that Google Photos was replacing Picasa photo editing software and the Picasa Web Albums online service.

Functions

Through machine learning, Google Photos enables the search for images using keywords without assigning them to the images beforehand. It also allows photos to be automatically grouped by people - from birth to old age.

The service allows you to save an unlimited number of photos up to 16 megapixel resolution and an unlimited number of videos - but only up to full HD resolution. A distinction is made between “high quality” and “original quality”. Only with "high quality" images will be reduced to a maximum of 16 megapixels and videos to a maximum of 1080p when uploading. With “original quality” media can theoretically be stored in infinite resolution - but this reduces the user's storage quota. The file formats MPG, MOD, MMV, TOD, WMV, ASF, AVI, DIVX, MOV, M4V, 3GP, 3G2, MP4, M2T, M2TS, MTS and MKV are supported. Other formats will reduce the storage space from December 6, 2018.

When combined with the Google Drive service, which is chargeable for larger amounts of data , more original files could be saved until June 30, 2019.

The service can be used as a web application or via the mobile app for iOS and Android , and with the “desktop uploader” from a PC under Windows or macOS .

Since November 15, 2016, the free photo scanner app from Google Photos (English. PhotoScan ) available on Google Play and Apple's App Store has been digitizing analog photos with processes for perspective correction and automatic edge detection.

The photos are organized in albums. Until December 19, 2018, private albums were allowed to contain up to 10,000 photos. Shared albums could contain up to 20,000 photos, with up to 10,000 per user. Since then, each album has been allowed to contain up to 20,000 photos. Invited persons can be given access to albums - but not withdrawn.

An online photo service for ordering photo albums was introduced in 2018 . Payment is made through Google Pay .

reception

Google Photos consistently received good reviews and praise for automatic sorting. Walter Mossberg wrote on his website Re / code that Google Photos was better than the competition from Amazon Cloud Drive , Apple's iCloud , Dropbox and Microsoft's OneDrive .

In June 2015, Google received criticism because the photo service sorted a 21-year-old African American and his friends into an automatically generated " Gorilla " album. Google apologized and removed albums for gorillas.
