Gorō Miyazaki ( Jap. 宮崎吾朗 , Miyazaki Gorō * 21st January 1967 in Tokyo ) is, like its world-renowned father Hayao Miyazaki , a Japanese Anime - Director .

Originally refusing to follow in his father's footsteps in the animation business, he decided to pursue himself in landscaping instead. Only after producer Toshio Suzuki managed to persuade him to work at the Ghibli Museum did a collaboration with Studio Ghibli begin .

When the planning for the anime film adaptation of Ursula K. Le Guins Erdsee began, he was offered to draw the storyboards for the film. After seeing the work, Suzuki decided that Goro should also direct the film.

This decision led to a personal crisis between Gorō and his father. Hayao Miyazaki was expressly against casting his son as a director, as he did not think he had the necessary experience to direct an entire film. The fronts hardened and neither of them spoke to each other during the entire production. Despite this tense situation, Gorō Miyazaki decided to complete the project.

On June 28, 2006 Gorō presented the completed film The Chronicles of Earth Sea in a preview for the first time . Surprisingly, Hayao also appeared at this performance and received his son's work positively. A message was later sent from Hayao to Gorō saying, "It was shot honestly, so it was good."

The film was selected in the Out of Competition category at the 63rd Venice Film Festival . Although he was able to stay at number 1 in the Japanese cinema charts for five weeks, Miyazaki received Japan's Bunshun Raspberry Award for "worst director" at the end of 2006 , and his film also received the award for "worst film". In 2007, Die Chroniken von Erdsee was nominated for the Japan Academy Award in the "Best Animated Film" category.

His next film Kokurikozaka kara , an adaptation of the shōjo manga of the same name by Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsurō Sayama from 1980, opened in Japanese cinemas in summer 2011. The film was named Animation of the Year and Best Local Film at the Tokyo Anime Awards 2012 .
