KK Studio Ghibli ( Japanese 株式会社 ス タ ジ オ ジ ブ リ , Kabushiki-gaisha Sutajio Jiburi ) is a Japanese animation film studio . Well-known anime productions of the studio are, for example, My Neighbor Totoro , Princess Mononoke , Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle .
history
The film Nausicaä from the Valley of the Winds by Hayao Miyazaki was very successful at the Japanese box office in 1984 and led the production company Tokuma Shoten to found Studio Ghibli in 1985. Since then, Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, along with producer Toshio Suzuki, were the leading actors of the studio, which was located in Kichijōji from 1985 to 1992 and has since been based in Koganei .
The name Ghibli goes back to an Italian name, which in turn is of Arabic origin, but with the pronunciation [ dʑíbɯɺi ] instead of the Italian hard "g". It stands for a hot Sahara desert wind ( Gibli قبلی) and was also used for the Italian aircraft Caproni Ca.309 Ghibli from the Second World War . As an aviation enthusiast, Miyazaki chose this name to make it clear that he wanted to bring "a breath of fresh air" to the Japanese anime industry.
The first full-length animated film from Ghibli was made in 1986 with Das Schloss im Himmel . It is about the adventure story of two children who go in search of a legendary, flying castle. While the film could n't surpass Nausicaa's popularity, it was also exceptionally successful for an anime film and enabled the studio to make further productions. Miyazaki and Takahata made two films in 1988: My Neighbor Totoro and The Last Glow-Worms could not meet the high box-office expectations, but received multiple awards, praised by critics and made the studio famous. While The Last Glow-Worms is a sad anti-war drama about two siblings, the children's film My Neighbor Totoro is primarily characterized by the fantasy creatures it contains. Merchandise -Article to Totoro sell still good, and the Totoro -Titellied is one of the most famous songs in Japan at all.
The first major financial success came in 1989 with Kiki's small delivery service . Based on a children's book by Eiko Kadono , the film about a young witch became the most successful Japanese film from 1989. Isao Takahata's Tears of Memory - Only Yesterday in 1990 had a similar success.
Because there was no longer enough space in the studio for around 90 employees, a new building was built in Koganei in 1992 . Almost at the same time Miyazaki's melancholy love story Porco Rosso appeared , which again became the most successful Japanese film of the year. While Pom Poko was again a cinematic success in 1994, Ghibli released a television film in 1993 with Whisper of the Sea - Ocean Waves , which was first made without the participation of Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki.
After Voice of the Heart - Whisper of the Heart , Studio Ghibli began work on Princess Mononoke in 1995 . This dramatic fairy tale was released in 1997 and was the most successful film of all time in Japan up to that point. The film first attracted attention outside of Japan. The real international breakthrough for Ghibli came in 2001 with Spirited Away , a complex fairy tale about a ten-year-old girl who ends up in a fantasy world. Chihiro was even more successful in Japan than Princess Mononoke , received the 2003 Oscar in the “Best Animated Film” category and the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlinale, and is the most awarded cartoon of all time.
After The Cat Kingdom, the next success came with Howl's Moving Castle . The fantasy story based on a novel by the English writer Diana Wynne Jones had the most successful film release of all time in Japan and was nominated for an Oscar in 2006.
The Chronicles of Earth Sea , a fantasy story based on the book The Far Shore by the American writer Ursula K. Le Guin , is the directorial debut of Hayao Miyazaki's son Gorō Miyazaki . The film was released in Japanese cinemas in July 2006 and in German cinemas on November 8, 2007.
On February 1, 2008, Kōji Hoshino , former president of Walt Disney Japan, Toshio Suzuki as president of Studio Ghibli.
On July 19, 2008, directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Ponyo - The Great Adventure by the Sea was released in Japanese cinemas and was released on September 16, 2010 in Germany.
The next Ghibli film, Arrietty - The Miraculous World of Borger , directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi , was released in Japanese cinemas on July 17, 2010 and in German cinemas on June 2, 2011. It is based on the 1952 children's book series Die Borger ( The Borrowers ) by Mary Norton .
The film Poppy Hill , directed by Gorō Miyazaki, was released on July 16, 2011 in Japan. It is an anime adaptation of the manga of the same name from 1980. The cinema release in Germany was in November 2013.
The film How the Wind Rises was released in Japanese cinemas on July 20, 2013. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, who also wrote the manga, which in turn is based on a short story by Tatsuo Hori about the aeronautical engineer Jirō Horikoshi . The simultaneously produced film The Legend of Princess Kaguya (orig .: Kaguya-hime no Monogatari ) directed by Isao Takahata was released in November 2013, although it was initially planned to be released at the same time as part of double screenings (as was already the case with My Neighbor Totoro and The last firefly had been the case).
In December 2013, the film adaptation of Joan G. Robinson 's children's book When Marnie Was There , directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, was announced, which was released on July 19, 2014 under the title Omoide no Marnie ( 思 い 出 の マ ー ニ ー ) in Japanese cinemas. The German theatrical release was on November 12, 2015 under the name Memories of Marnie . In addition, Ghibli assisted under the direction of Gorō Miyazaki at Polygon Pictures Sanzoku no Musume Rōnya , an adaptation of Astrid Lindgren's Ronja the robber's daughter , the studio's first television series and first computer-animated work. This series ran on Japanese television from October 2014 to March 2015; the German version ran for the first time on January 27, 2017 on Amazon Video .
In August 2014, producer Toshio Suzuki announced that the company would be restructured and that no further films would be produced during this period. At first it was also unclear whether the company would even withdraw completely from the film scene. In October 2016, however, it was announced that Hayao Miyazaki was working on a 14-minute short film called Kemushi no Boro (English: "The Boro Caterpillar"), which will be released in March 2018 at the Ghibli Museum. In addition, rumors of a new full-length animated film directed by Miyazakis, which were officially confirmed in October 2017, increased at the same time. Miyazaki announced that this feature film based on the children's book Kimitachi Wa Dō Ikiruka ( 君 た ち は ど う 生 き る か ; dt. About "How will you live?") By Genzaburō Yoshino will have the same title and the production time will be 3 to 4 years . In December of that year, Suzuki also stated that the plot of the film will differ significantly from that of the novel and that it will be a fantasy and action film .
Ghibli Museum
In the Tokyo suburb of Mitaka at Inokashira Park, there is a Ghibli Museum based on the style of the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser , in which, among other things, original drawings and drafts can be viewed and anime short films produced especially for the museum are shown. The huge plush model of the “cat bus” from My Neighbor Totoro is particularly popular with children .
There is only a limited number of admission tickets for each day, and these can only be purchased in advance. In Japan they can be purchased at the earliest one month in advance from the Lawson combination chain , abroad at least three months in advance from various official sales offices around the world.

Production engineering
While almost all anime productions are made exclusively on the computer nowadays, Studio Ghibli continues to use “classic” animation techniques such as photographing hand-drawn films and only uses computer animation to a very limited extent.
