Gordon Astall (born September 22, 1927 in Horwich , Greater Manchester ) is a former English football player . He came here as a right winger both in 1956 to two internationals in the English national team and in the B team of his country and for a selection of the Football League for use.

Athletic career

Gordon Astall was initially active as an amateur player for Southampton FC before he was signed by Plymouth Argyle in November 1947 after an unsuccessful trial with Bolton Wanderers . At the home game in February 1948 against Luton Town he made his debut, quickly became a regular on the home side and led his club to the championship in the third-rate Third Division South in 1953 .

In October of the same year, the second-rate league competitor Birmingham City bought him for 14,000 British pounds, with Astall following his teammate Alex Govan , who had also moved from Plymouth to St. Andrews . Astall had scored 42 goals for Plymouth in 188 games and replaced Jack Stewart from Scotland in Birmingham . He quickly secured a regular place there and was instrumental in winning the championship in the second division Second Division and the associated promotion to the top English league in 1955 . In addition, he reached the final of the FA Cup in the same year and lost to Manchester City 1: 3 at Wembley Stadium .

International recognition followed for the first time when he came to his first international match on May 20, 1956. Six days after this game against Finland , in which Astall scored the third goal for England to make it 5-1, his second appearance against Germany followed in front of 95,000 spectators in the Berlin Olympic Stadium , but it was also his last for the England senior team .

In July 1961 he moved to Torquay United after 57 goals in 235 games for Birmingham and made his debut there for the "Gulls" on August 19 in the 2-1 defeat by Crystal Palace . At the end of the season, Astall had scored 10 goals in 27 games, but could not prevent the relegation of his club to the fourth division Fourth Division , which the club suffered due to the away defeat at Barnsley on the last day of the game. After just six more games for Torquay, Astall ended his active career as a professional footballer.

According to the Torquay newspaper “Herald Express” in May 2000, Astall continued to live in Torquay after his resignation and became interested in golf from then on .
