Gordon Borrie Johnson, Baron Borrie (* 13. March 1931 in Croydon , Surrey , † thirtieth September 2016 ) was a British lawyer and politician of the Labor Party .

life and career

Legal career

Borrie was born to Stanley Borrie and Alice Forsyth. He attended the John Bright Grammar School in Llandudno , Caernarvonshire and graduated from the University of Manchester with a Bachelor of Law (LL.M.) and later a Master of Law (LL.M.) .

In 1952 he was admitted to the Middle Temple bar. Between 1952 and 1954 he worked for the Army Legal Services in Korea . Between 1957 and 1964 he was a lecturer at the College of Law in Korea. From 1965 to 1968 he was a law lecturer at Birmingham University . He was professor of English law there from 1969 to 1976. In 1980 he received the office of judge, a so-called bencher , at the registry court of the bar association. In 1986 Borrie became a crown attorney . He was awarded an honorary doctorate in law (LL.D.) from the City of London in 1989 and the University of Manchester in 1990. The Dundee University awarded him in 1993 an honorary doctorate of law. In 1991 he also received an LL.D. from Hull University College . He was accepted as a Fellow at the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb.) In 1992.

During his legal practice, Borrie twice ran unsuccessfully in the British general election, 1955 for the constituency of Croydon North East and 1959 for the constituency of Ilford North East .

Borrie has authored several legal books: In 1981 he published the book The Consumer, Society and the Law with AL Diamond . In 1984 he presented The Development of Consumer Law and Policy and in 1988 Commercial Law . He also wrote the book Law of Contempt , published in 1995.

Further career

From 1976 to 1992 he was Director General of the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), which acts as the competition authority in Great Britain but also carries out general consumer protection tasks. He was director of the Woolwich Building Society from 1992 to 2000. He was also President of the Institute of Trading Standards, the state's regulatory agency for trade, from 1992 to 1996. From 1992 to 1994 he was chairman of the Labor Commission on Social Justice. From 1994 to 2001 he was director of the TeleWest Communications Group . From 1997 to 2000 he was director of the Direct Marketing Authority, the industry association for direct marketing companies. Lord Borrie was Chairman of the Advertising Standards Authority , the voluntary self-regulatory agency for advertising , from January 2001 to 2007 . From 2007 to 2009 he was Estate Agents Ombudsman . Since 1997 he has been vice chairman of the Consumer Affairs and Trading Standards Group , a bipartisan parliamentary association dedicated to consumer protection.

Peer and honorary positions

On December 21, 1995, Borrie was named a Life Peer as Baron Borrie , of Abbots Morton in the County of Hereford and Worcester . Borrie was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Reform Club . He became a member of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) in 1982.

Borrie married Dorene Toland in 1960, the daughter of Herbert Toland and Gladys Davies.
