Gottfried Kroschwald

Gottfried Kroschwald (born August 31, 1936 - † February 26, 2018 ) was a German politician ( SED ). From 1984 to 1990 he was the district mayor of Berlin-Mitte .

Life

Kroschwald learned the trade of foreign trade and finished his studies with a degree in economics. He was a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). Kroschwald worked in 1974 as acting director of the Berlin beverage combine and from 1981 to May 1984 as first deputy chairman of the economic council of the Berlin magistrate . In the local elections on May 6, 1984, he was elected as a district councilor in the district council assembly of Berlin-Mitte. At the constituent meeting of the city district council meeting of Berlin-Mitte on May 22, 1984, he was elected mayor of the city district (successor to Horst Kreuterwho no longer ran for this office for health reasons). In the local elections in the GDR in 1989 , he was re-elected to the district assembly of Berlin-Mitte and on May 29, 1989 as mayor. During a public council meeting of the city district assembly on November 16, 1989, the majority of the city district councils refused to trust him.

On February 8, 1990, the attorney general of Berlin announced that further investigations had been initiated as part of the investigation into suspected election fraud, including against the district mayor of Mitte, Kroschwald. At an extraordinary meeting of the city council on February 9, 1990, he finally asked for his recall. He had participated in the falsification of the results of the local elections on May 7, 1989, admitted the man who had stayed at home because of illness in a letter to the MPs. So far he had denied such fraudulent acts on an honorary basis. He apologized for his behavior and assured him that he would make a personal statement in front of the city district assembly in due course. The MPs elected Ulrich Fahl as acting mayor.

Kroschwald was married and the father of two children. He died at the age of 81 and was buried in the Basdorf cemetery.
