Gottlieb William Leitner
Gottlieb William Leitner (born October 14, 1840 in Pest , Austrian Empire ; died March 22, 1899 in Bonn ) was an orientalist .
Life
Gottlieb William Leitner was the son of a doctor, his nephew was the British politician Leopold Stennett Amery .
Leitner received his training in Constantinople , in what was then Brussa , in Malta and at King's College London . He became a teacher of Arabic and Turkish there in 1859 and a few years later went to Lahore , India, where he made a living by founding numerous teaching institutions (including the Punjab University College ), literary societies and public libraries.
His research trips to Kashmir , Little Tibet , Ladakh , Dardistan etc. , which he undertook in the years 1866-1870 on behalf of the Punjab government, were of great importance, especially through the discovery of the Dardic languages , which are related to Sanskrit and which he learned with great difficulty and in the work The races and languages of Dardistan (Lahor 1867–1871, 2 vol .; 2nd ed. 1877) treated scientifically, and by finding the remains of a tribe in which Leitner descendants of a Macedonian settlement based on found Greek Buddhist sculptures the time of Alexander d. Size supposed.
His extensive collection of ancient Indian and Central Asian antiquities, coins, sculptures and manuscripts caused a sensation at the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873.
