The Goursez Breizh or Goursez Vreizh is a bard association from Brittany with the aim of promoting and cultivating Celtic literature, art, music and the Breton language . The union is in close contact with the Gorsedd of Bards of Wales and the Gorsedh Kernow from Cornwall because there with the Cornish and Welsh have also Celtic languages are spoken. The word Goursez is borrowed from the Welsh Gorsedd and means throne . Breizh is the Breton name for Brittany. In French , the term Gorsedd de Bretagne is used. The Goursez Breizh is to be assigned to the movements of the Celtic neo-paganism and is an association of modern druids .

history

100th anniversary in 1999

Théodore Hersart de La Villemarqué (1815-1895), a French scholar of antiquity and linguistics, traveled to Wales in 1838 to establish contact with the Gorsedd of Bards and to organize a joint Celtic congress. There he was accepted into the association under the name Barz Nizon . La Villemarqué later founded the Breuriez ar Varzed (Bards of Brittany) association, whose activity was limited to the study of Breton art and linguistics. The Archdruid (Archdruid) of Wales had already approved the establishment of a Gorsedd of Brittany, but the idea was not pursued further. In 1898 the l'Union régionaliste bretonne (URB) (Union of Breton Regionalists) was founded in order to preserve Breton culture and regional independence. In 1899 a delegation of twenty traveled to Wales for the Eisteddfod , a festival of literature, music and song organized annually by the Gorsedd of Bards. A Breton Gorsedd was founded there through the symbolic presentation of Excalibur , the sword of King Arthur . In 1900 the inaugural meeting of the Gorsedd of Lesser Britain took place in Guingamp and Jean Fustec was appointed the first Archdruid. In 1908 the association was officially proclaimed under the name Gorsedd Barzed Gourenez Breiz Izel (Gorsedd the bards from the peninsula of Brittany). The current official name is Breudeuriezh Drouized, Barzhed hag Ovizion Breizh (Brotherhood of the Druids, Bards and Ovates of Brittany).

Ranks and chief

As with the Gorsedd of Wales, there are three ranks at Goursez Breizh that historically stem from the three degrees of Freemasonry . These are in ascending order:

The head of the Gorsedd is the Archdruid (Archdruid), who is elected for a term of three years.

The Tribann

The Tribann

The mythical symbol of Goursez Breizh is the Tribann , which represents sun rays emanating from a center and is supposed to symbolize the virtues of love , justice and truthfulness . It probably goes back to Edward Williams , the founder of the Welsh Gorsedds of Bards, who called it The Mystic Mark. It was first seen in proclamations in 1833 and on banners of the Gorsedds of Bards in 1850. Today this symbol is also used extensively in the Gorsedd of Bards. The Cornish Bards Association also uses this symbol. They call it Awen there .
