from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gozbert (also Gosbert , Gozpert ; * 10th century in Essing (?); † January 21, 1001 in the Tegernsee Monastery ) was a German Benedictine and abbot of the Tegernsee Monastery .

Life

Gozbert probably came from a noble family from Essing near Kelheim . He and his brother Walkun received their training in Augsburg . After he and his brother had made a donation to the Sankt Emmeram monastery around 975 , he was accepted into the monastery and the Benedictine order under Abbot Ramwold and a cleric at the Regensburg Cathedral . He is said to have been friends with Ramwold even later.

Gozbert was elected abbot of the monastery in Tegernsee in 982. As such, he developed relationships with the monasteries of Sankt Emmeram in Regensburg, Sankt Mang in Füssen , Sankt Pantaleon in Cologne and Sankt Burkard in Würzburg . In addition, he had the Feuchtwangen monastery renewed and, among others, sent Froumund von Tegernsee there. He is regarded as a monastery reformer and expanded both the library and the archive in Tegernsee. In particular, he had copies made by ancient authors. He also sponsored the monastery school and founded a painting school. He also had bell casting, glass painting and wood carving maintained in the monastery.

He maintained friendly relations with Wolfgang von Regensburg and the later Emperor Heinrich II, as well as with Adelheid of Burgundy , who are said to have supported him in his reforms.
