The Grünhornhütte is the first mountain hut for alpinists to be built by the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). It was created in 1863, the year the SAC was founded. It is located south of Linthal in the canton of Glarus at 2,448  m above sea level. M. in the Glarus Alps on the eastern flank of the Tödis near the Bifertenfirn .

It got its name from the Grünhorn , a 2953  m above sea level. M. high pre-summit of the Tödis, on whose east ridge it lies. The Tödi can be climbed from here in about five hours. It is not accessible in winter.

history

Initially, the Grünhorn Hut only consisted of low walls, over which the mountain hikers drew a tarpaulin at night. It was later expanded and became increasingly popular, so that the Fridolinshütte was built in 1890 due to the lack of space. In 1898 the simple accommodation on the Grünhorngrat was replaced by a wooden hut.

The hut had eight places. It was not managed and only served as an emergency storage facility. Their condition is described as "museum character". It has been closed since 2011 and is no longer available as an emergency shelter. It has been open to the public since 2013; the Fridolinshütte provides access .

Access

The hut is located above the Fridolinshütte. Access is from Linthal via Tierfehd , Vorder Sand, Hinter Sand and the Fridolinshütte. The walking time from Linthal is around 6½ hours.
