Grace Jacob Bullen (born February 7, 1997 in Ghinda , Eritrea ) is a Norwegian wrestler .

Career

Grace Jacob Bullen was born in Ghinda, Eritrea to South Sudanese parents who fled the civil war in Eritrea. In 2001 she came to Norway with her family. There she started wrestling in the same year, animated by her older sister, who also practiced this sport. She became a member of the BK (wrestling club) "Atlas" Fredrikstad . She was trained there by Gheorghe Costin. In the course of her career, Joakim Aardalen and Lotta Andersson joined as coaches.

She has been competing in international championships since she was 15 and was already extremely successful in the junior division. At her first participation in such a championship, the Nordic Junior Championships for the Cadets age group in May 2012 in Aarhus, she won the title in the weight class up to 56 kg. In July 2012, she took 3rd place in the same weight class at the European Junior Championships (Cadets) in Katowice.

In 2013 she won the Nordic Junior Championship (Cadets) in Esloev in the weight class up to 60 kg and a month later she was in Bar, Macedonia, in the weight class up to 56 kg European Junior Champion (Cadets). At the Junior World Championship in 2013 in Zrenjanin, however, she had to be content with 5th place in the same weight class.

In May 2014 she was in Samokow Junior European Champion (Cadets) in the weight class up to 60 kg in front of the French Koumba Selene Fanta Larroque , who was one of her main competitors in the following years. In 2014 it continued to be very successful. In July 2014 Grace Bullen was also Junior World Champion (Cadets) in Snina, Slovakia, again ahead of Koumba Selene Fanta Larroque and Yukako Kawai from Japan. In August 2014 she finally became a youth Olympic champion in the weight class up to 60 kg in Nanjing. She came to victories over Anil Mane Reshma, India, Koumba Selene Fanta Larroque, Noelle Therencia Mbouma Manako, Congo and Pei Xingru, China.

From 2015 she also started with the senior women. In February 2015 she managed to take 3rd place behind Zhou Zhangting, China and Michelle Fazzari from Canada at the renowned Klippan Lady Open in the weight class up to 58 kg. At the 1st European Games in Baku in 2015, she lost her first fight against Emese Barka from Hungary in the same weight class , but defeated Valerija Scholobowa Koblowa from Russia and Irina Netreba from Azerbaijan in the consolation round and thus won a bronze medal. In the same month Grace Bullen became Junior European Champion (Juniors) in Istanbul in the weight class up to 59 kg. At the World Championships this year in Las Vegas, however, she still had to learn the hard way, because although she won the first round in the weight class up to 58 kg over Luisa Niemesch from Germany, she then lost to the experienced Marianna Sastin from Hungary. Since this did not reach the final, she was eliminated and only came in 13th place.

In March 2016, Grace Bullen became vice European champion in the weight class up to 58 kg in Riga. She defeated in Riga a. a. in the semifinals Luisa Niemesch, but lost in the final against Natalja Sinischina . Then she tried to qualify in three tournaments for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In Zrenjanin it took 3rd place, in Ulaan-Baatar 7th place and in Istanbul 8th place. None of these places was enough to get the right to start in Rio. After this disappointment, she was again Junior European Champion (Juniors) in Bucharest in June 2016 in the weight class up to 59 kg. In the final, she defeated Emma Johansson from Sweden.

The year 2017 began very successfully for Grace Bullen, as she became the European women's champion for the first time in Novi Sad in May 2017. In the weight class up to 58 kg she defeated Katarzyna Madrowska, Poland, Natalja Sinischin, Azerbaijan, Emese Barka and Mariana Cherdivara-Esanu , Moldova. In June 2017 she was again junior European champion (Juniors) in Dortmund in the weight class up to 59 kg. In the final, she beat Anastasia Nichita from Moldova. This thread of success broke somewhat in August 2017 when she "only" took 3rd place in the same weight class at the European Junior Championships in Tampere. She lost there in the semifinals against Anastasia Nichita, whom she had defeated in Dortmund. In the battle for a bronze medal, she then defeated Jing Jiang from China. However, the World Championship in Paris in August 2017 was a big disappointment for Grace Bullen. There she lost her first fight against Oluwafumilaya Adeniyi Aminat from Nigeria. Since this did not reach the final, she was eliminated and only came in 16th place.

In May 2018 Grace Bullen was unable to become European champion again in the weight class up to 57 kg in Kaspiisk. She came in Kaspiisk only to a victory over Jowita Wrzesien from Poland and then lost to Aljona Kolesnik from Azerbaijan, which she was eliminated and only finished 7th. At this year's World Championships in Budapest, she defeated Park Insum from North Korea in the quarterfinals in the weight class up to 57 kg, but lost in the semifinals to Rong Ningning from China and in the subsequent battle for a bronze medal also to Dhanda Pooja from India. It took 5th place. Just a month later she managed to take revenge against the reigning world champion Ring Ningning at the U23 world championships in the weight class up to 59 kg in Bucharest, who she defeated in the final. Before that, she had achieved a remarkable victory over Yuzuru Kumano from Japan in the semifinals .

In 2019, Grace Bullen competed at the European Championships in Bucharest in April, where she finished 5th in the weight class up to 57 kg after losing in the quarter-finals to Anastasia Nichita from Moldova. She took the same place at the European Games in Minsk in June 2019. She lost there in the round of 16 against Irina Kuratschkina from Belarus, but was able to continue wrestling in the consolation round because it reached the final, but was finally defeated again in the fight for one of the bronze medals against Anastasia Nichita. Even at the 2019 World Cup, which was held in Nur-Sultan in September of this year, she remained without a medal in the weight class up to 57 kg. She lost again in Nur-Sultan in the second round against Anastasia Nichita, was eliminated and only came in 10th place.

At the European Championships 2020, which took place in Rome in February, Grace Bullen found her way back to success. She was there in the weight class up to 57 kg with victories over Aljona Kolesnik, Azerbaijan, Irina Kuratschkina and Alena Akobjan, Ukraine for the second time in her career European champion.
