Gabriel von Salamanca-Ortenburg
Gabriel von Salamanca-Ortenburg (March 17, 1489 , † December 12, 1539 in Ensisheim ) was Treasurer General and Court Chancellor under Archduke Ferdinand of Austria from 1521 to 1526, and from 1524 he held the title of Count of Ortenburg .
Life
Gabriel Salamanca was a descendant of a wealthy trading house from Burgos , Spain . His presumed date of birth is recorded in a contemporary natal chart
He worked from 1514 for the State Chancellery Emperor Maximilian I and a close confidant of the young, also dating Spain Ferdinand, the 1521 "Lower Austria" countries, namely the Archduchy Austria, which was a few years later Styria , Carinthia , Krain and Tyrol received and later to succeed his brother Charles V on the imperial throne. Ferdinand appointed Gabriel as General Treasurer and Court Chancellor in 1521. His measures to reorganize the state budget failed, however, as the operations of the foreign businessman met with rejection from the Austrian nobility, who also envy the Spaniard the strong influence on the Archduke.
As Lord von Ehrenberg in Tyrol , on Freyenstein and Karlsbach in Lower Austria, Salamanca soon rose to baron, on March 10, 1524 he was enfeoffed by Ferdinand with the county of Ortenburg. The headquarters of the extensive and wealthy county in Upper Carinthia was the Ortenburg , which Salamanca had received shortly before from Emperor Charles V. This led to a conflict with Count Christoph von Ortenberg , who had inheritance claims on the county . At that time still unmarried, he was urged by Ferdinand to marry in accordance with his status, and on July 20, 1523 he married Countess Elisabeth von Eberstein.
Fierce hostility from the Austrian estates, he had to give up his offices at the Habsburg court on May 3, 1526, but retained his possessions. After his first wife died early, he married the margrave daughter Elisabeth von Baden-Durlach (1516–1568) in 1533. Instead of the Ortenburg, he planned to build a new mansion in the nearby Markflecken Spittal . He commissioned Italian builders with the planning and construction of a magnificent palace, today's Porcia Palace , which was built for almost 70 years, so that the original builder Gabriel von Salamanca-Ortenburg, who in 1539 in Ensisheim , a Habsburg enclave in Alsace , died, never lived in. The Palais Porcia in Vienna was also built on his order .
