Graham Ward (theologian)

Graham John Ward (born October 25, 1955 in Manchester ) is a British Anglican priest and theologian . He was Samuel Ferguson Professor of Philosophical Theology and Ethics at the University of Manchester and has succeeded Marilyn McCord Adams Regius Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford since 2012 .

Educational path

Graham Ward was born in Manchester on October 25, 1955. He completed his first degree in English and French at Fitzwilliam College ( Cambridge ). He then studied theology at Selwyn College (Cambridge) and was prepared for his ordination at Westcott House , a theological college of the Anglican Church in Cambridge .

Academic and spiritual career

Ward was Chaplain and Fellow of Exeter College (Oxford), Lecturer at the University of Birmingham and Dean at Peterhouse (Cambridge). He was ordained a deacon in 1990 and a priest in 1991 . At the University of Manchester, he held several positions in succession. First he was a Senior Fellow in Religion and Gender from 1997 to 1998 , then Professor of Contextual Theology and Ethics and, from 2009, Samuel Ferguson Professor for Philosophical Theology and Ethics and Chairman of the School of Arts, Histories and Culture. Since 2012 he has been Regius Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford.

Ward has worked in various fields of theology, in particular postmodern theology, as well as interdisciplinary in the areas of philosophy , psychoanalysis , gender studies and queer theory . He has published works on the theology of language, postmodernism, cultural analysis and Christology . More recently he has worked particularly on Christian social teaching , political theory, and cultural hermeneutics . Through his participation in the anthology Radical Orthodoxy: A New Theology , which he co-edited with John Milbank and Catherine Pickstock , he became one of the main initiators of the theological movement of the Radical Orthodoxy . He is the editor of three academic book series: Radical Orthodoxy (Routledge), Christian Theology in Context (OUP) and Illuminations: Religion & Theology (Blackwell).
