Gran Premio Republica de Colombia 1971

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gran Premio Republica de Colombia 1971 (German: Grand Prix of the Republic of Colombia ) was one of two races in the Colombian Formula 2 series that took place at the beginning of 1971 in the Colombian capital Bogotá . The invitation race was international. It attracted numerous drivers and teams from the Formula 2 European Championship , but had no influence on the European Championship in 1971, which began two months later .

background

The Grand Prix of the Republic of Colombia took place on the occasion of the inauguration of Autódromo Internacional Ricardo Mejía , the first permanent automobile race track in Colombia. The operator of the track hired a number of racing drivers from the Formula 2 European Championship environment through an Italian agency , who were to contest two races with their teams on the new track in Bogotá. For the teams this meant an opportunity to test their new material for the 1971 season under competitive conditions. The Grand Prix of the Republic of Colombia was the first of the two races, followed a week later by the Gran Premio Ciudad de Bogotá (Grand Prix of the City of Bogotá), which was contested in the same place with a largely identical starting field.
