action

Kamar and the olive plantation owner Zaid get married with a big festival. A short time later, the Israeli army arrives and confiscates a large part of their property. Zaid defends himself against this and is arrested. Kamar is expected to submit to the family and renounce her passion for dancing. She is an enthusiastic dancer who until then regularly went to a dance school for training and also performed in public. Kamar helps her family with the olive harvest and only secretly attends dance training. She meets Kais, the new choreographer for the dancers. He was in exile in Lebanon and came back to lease and reopen the fair that once belonged to his father. Kamar and Kais feel a kinship, as a result of which Kamar increasingly gets into an emotional conflict. As often as possible, she visits her husband Zaid in prison. This encourages her to go back to dance training because he knows how important this is to her. Kamar makes the decision to organize the olive harvest and against the dance premiere, which gives her respect in the family. Nevertheless, she shows up at the premiere and Kais demands that she confess to him. However, Kamar opts for her family.

criticism

At the time it was made, “Pomegranates and Myrrh” was the first full-length feature film by a Palestinian director. To this day, the film triggers protests in the country where it was made, as it takes the perspective of women and is committed to their right to self-determination in an Islamic male society.
