Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned is the first add-on for Grand Theft Auto IV in the Grand Theft Auto franchise. The Lost and Damned was developed by Rockstar North and released on February 17, 2009 for Xbox 360 and April 16, 2010 for PlayStation 3 and PC. The Lost and Damned is available either as a paid download game from the Xbox Live Marketplace , or together with the second expansion The Ballad of Gay Tony as a stand-alone game on the later released disk Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City . The add-on initially only appeared on the Xbox 360 and was later announced for Playstation 3 and PC as well. In addition to new missions, there are new weapons, improved motorcycle controls and new additions to the Grand Theft Auto IV soundtrack .

Similar to the main game GTA IV , there were reviews outside the computer game press, such as B. in Spiegel Online, Stern, New York Times and The Daily Telegraph.

action

Like the main game of GTA IV , The Lost and Damned is set in the fictional city of Liberty City , which is based on the real New York City and the suburb of Liberty City, Alderney , which is based on New Jersey. The action of the add-on often overlaps with that of the main game and that of the second add-on, so many of the scenes contained in all parts are experienced from the perspective of the respective protagonist.

As in the other expansion, a new protagonist is introduced in The Lost and Damned , Johnny Klebitz, a high-ranking member of the motorcycle and rocker gang “The Lost Motorcycle Club”.

The action begins when Billy Gray, the leader of the Lost, is paroled after serving a long sentence. Up to this point, Johnny had passed the business of the gang on, negotiated a ceasefire with the warring motorcycle gang "The Angels of Death" and secured the gang financially through cleverly organized drug deals.

Immediately after Billy's release, the gang made it clear that he was the number 1 of the gang again, so that a conflict between Johnny and Billy was developing. The other gang members immediately notice Billy because of his brutality and breaks the truce with the Angels of Death. Under Billy's leadership, the Lost get more and more distressed. Because of his long prison stay, Billy seems to have become very suspicious of Johnny, the gang is increasingly split into a camp that secretly wants Johnny as the new leader and a camp that is loyal to Billy. Johnny and his closest confidante and friend within the gang, Jim Fitzgerald, act more and more handwritten as the game progresses.

After a busted drug deal with the Chinese triads , Billy is finally arrested and blames Johnny for it.

Brian, one of the gang members who is still loyal to Billy, lets the conflict within the two parties of the gang finally escalate and an open fight ensues, in which the majority of the gang members are killed. Finally, Johnny succeeds in catching and killing Brian with great losses and reuniting the gang.

Now that the gang is so weakened, Johnny works with various underworld giants , such as the Puerto Rican dealer Elizabeta Torres or the Italian mafioso Ray Boccino. Again and again he has to bail out his drug-addicted ex-girlfriend Ashley.

Through Ray Boccino, Johnny also gets into a large, illegal business with diamonds and is on several missions to do so. This chapter can be experienced in the main game from the point of view of Niko Bellic, as well as in the second expansion for GTA IV , The Ballad of Gay Tony , also from the point of view of Luis Lopez and Tony Prince.

Eventually it is revealed that the arrested Billy wants to use the witness protection program and testify against Johnny and the rest of the gang. As a result, Johnny enters the state prison in Alderney and kills Billy. Shortly before, he had learned that Jim, his closest confidante in the gang, had been killed because of the botched diamond deal.

In the end, apart from Johnny, only three members of the Lost are still alive: Clay, Terry and Angus, who is confined to a wheelchair. The gang is almost destroyed, the brotherhood almost at an end and so the remaining members have finally rebuilt the gang and burned down their former clubhouse. The last scene shows the four men looking at the burning house.

Gameplay

The game principle hardly differs from that of the main game. The entire urban area of Liberty City from GTA IV is also accessible in The Lost and Damned . There are a number of missions that are embedded in the main storyline and almost always represent criminal tasks with the help of weapons and vehicles. In contrast to the main game, the first missions in The Lost and Damned are much more action-packed and brutal. There are also new weapons, vehicles and radio stations.

In addition to the main story, there is also the option of taking part in motorcycle races or arm wrestling competitions. There are also so-called “gang warfare” missions. In these missions there will be fights with members of the Angels of Death or other gangs.

criticism

The American parents' organization Common Sense Media warned against The Lost and Damned , because in addition to the violence typical of the series, a naked male body can also be seen here.

The Lost and Damned received a very positive response from the trade press . The website Metacritic listed an average rating of 90 out of 100 possible points. The German magazine GamePro called the game a "mandatory download".
