Grande Cariçaie
The Grande Cariçaie [gʀɑ̃ːd kaːʀise] is a riverside landscape on the south and east banks of Lake Neuchâtel . It is the largest contiguous wetland in Switzerland and is recognized by the Ramsar Convention . The name refers to the stiff sedge ( Carex elata ), which is very common there and is called le grand carex in French .
history
The Grande Cariçaie is a product of the first Jura water correction from 1868 to 1891, during which the lake level of Lake Neuchâtel was lowered by around three meters. As a result, the southern shore of the lake retreated several hundred meters to the north, so that the lake bed of the former shallow water zone was now above the lake level. Since the swamps in the Grosse Moos and in the Orbe plain fell dry as a desired consequence of the correction , this newly formed wetland offered the animals and plants from these regions a retreat with very similar environmental conditions. Just a few years after the end of the first correction, the corresponding ecosystems were established in the Grande Cariçaie .
geography
The area covers about 40 km of the southern and eastern shores of Lake Neuchâtel in the cantons of Vaud , Friborg , Neuchâtel and Bern and has an area of around 30 square kilometers. It comprises 20% of the flat moors and 25% of the alluvial forest areas in the Swiss plateau . Around 800 plant species and probably over 10,000 different animal species live within the Grande Cariçaie, which corresponds to around a quarter of the flora and fauna in Switzerland.
The Grande Cariçaie is divided into eight cantonal nature reserves , which together cover almost the entire area of the area. They are:
