The Fanel is a nature reserve in the cantons of Bern and Neuchâtel . It is located on the northeast bank of Lake Neuchâtel . It is bordered to the south by the Broye Canal , which also forms the Bernese canton border with the canton of Vaud .
description
The Fanel was declared a cantonal nature reserve on March 14, 1967 by resolution of the government council. It is looked after and maintained by the members of the Bernese Ala and the nature conservation inspectorate of the canton of Bern. Since 1976 it has been the first Ramsar property in Switzerland together with the “du Bas-Lac” nature reserve . As a wetland of international importance, it is one of the most important breeding and wintering areas for waterfowl in Switzerland. It is also located within the largest contiguous Swiss reed area, the Grande Cariçaie . So far, over 300 bird species have been identified, including numerous Limikolen species . The area is 430 m above sea level and covers an area of 485 ha.
A Bernese Ala observation tower is available for bird watching in the lagoon area. The area is divided into three protection zones:
- A = core zone with water, islands, swamp, reeds and reeds
- B = buffer zone with agricultural and forestry use without restrictions
- C = State forest and upstream strip of cultivated land, reed and lake areas with limited recreational use. (For example camping or playground)
The TCS operates a campsite in Gampelen in Fanel , which is expected to give way to renaturation in 2024 .
