features

Side view

The bugs are 6.7 to 8.0 millimeters long. They have wide, pale edges on the pronotum and two raised pale lines on the scutellum , which form a V at the tip. The front of the pronotum is wider than the head and the compound eyes .

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed from North Africa across the Mediterranean to the south of England and Scandinavia. In the east the distribution extends to the Caucasus. In Central Europe, the species is widespread and mostly common. You can find them in the Alps well over 1000 meters above sea level. In Great Britain it occurs only sporadically and rarely in the south, especially in the south-east of England. Similar to Aellopus atratus, dry, warm, open habitats with sandy soils are populated, and more rarely also limestone grasslands or ruderal areas.

Way of life

The animals feed of the seeds on Raublattgewächsen (Boraginaceae), such as snake heads ( Echium ), violets ( Anchusa ), dog tongues ( Cynoglossum ) and Forget-me-not ( Myosotis ). The nymphs also suckle on the mint plants (Lamiaceae), legumes (Fabaceae) and cranesbills (Geraniaceae). They live below the plants, but the adults as well as the nymphs also climb on the inflorescences of the plants. The wintering takes place as an imago in dry soil litter and under plant rosettes. Mating and oviposition take place in May, the adult animals of the new generation appear from the end of July. One generation is trained every year.
