Karl Ludwig Muff , von Muff since 1897 , (born March 13, 1846 in Reutlingen ; † March 11, 1935 ) was a Württemberg lieutenant general .

Life

family

He was the son of the chief bailiff Ludwig Muff and his wife Emilie, nee Stängel. Muff married Anna Luise Eisenbach (1856–1933). The two sons Wolfgang (1880–1947), later General of the Infantry in World War II , and Friedrich Erich (1881–1948) emerged from the marriage.

Military career

Muff attended the Latin schools in Reutlingen, Blaubeuren and Lauffen am Neckar as well as the Protestant theological seminar in Blaubeuren. He studied law in Tübingen and joined the 1st Infantry Regiment "Queen Olga" of the Württemberg Army on April 4, 1867 as a one-year volunteer . There Muff was appointed portepeef ensign in October 1867 and transferred to the 4th Infantry Regiment on September 9, 1868 as a second lieutenant with a patent from September 10, 1868 . A short time later, in November, he was transferred to the 3rd Jäger Battalion. With this association Muff took part in the war against France in 1870/71 . He fought in the battle of Wörth as well as in the enclosure and siege of Paris .

Promoted to Premier Lieutenant on February 6, 1871 , Muff served as a battalion adjutant from March to the end of September 1872 and then served as adjutant of the grenadier regiment "King Karl" (5th Württembergisches) No. 123 . At the beginning of February 1878 he was promoted to captain and company commander , became a major on August 8, 1889 and as such a battalion commander in the infantry regiment "Grand Duke Friedrich von Baden" (8th Württembergisches) No. 126 on April 21, 1890 . On January 27, 1895, he was transferred to the staff of the Grenadier Regiment "King Karl" (5th Württembergisches) No. 123 and on March 22, 1895, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel .

For his services he was awarded the Cross of Honor of the Order of the Württemberg Crown on June 3, 1897 by King Wilhelm II . Associated with this was the elevation to the personal nobility and he was allowed to call himself von Muff after his entry in the nobility register .

Promoted to colonel on June 17, 1897 , Muff was commander of the infantry regiment "Kaiser Friedrich, King of Prussia" (7th Württembergisches) No. 125 from July 20, 1897 to June 3, 1899 and was then in command of the infantry -Regiment "Grand Duke Friedrich von Baden" (8th Württembergisches) No. 126 . Muff was then commissioned on April 13, 1901 with the leadership of the 51st Infantry Brigade and with the promotion to major general on May 18, 1901 appointed brigade commander. He was given the character of Lieutenant General on April 24, 1904, and was put up for disposal with a pension .

After his departure he lived in Alfdorf . On December 4, 1910, Muff was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Military Merit .

At the beginning of the First World War, Muff was reactivated as Lieutenant General zD and served as commander of the 54th Infantry Brigade. In this position he received the Wilhelm Cross with Swords and Crown on October 5, 1916 .
