The grass-iris ( Iris graminea ), and Grass-leaved Iris , Grass Iris , plum fragrance iris or Plum Iris called, is a plant from the kind of irises ( Iris ). The variety Iris graminea var. Pseudocyperus (Schur) Beck has been cultivated since 1568 at the latest. Today it can be found scattered in borders as an ornamental plant .
features
The grass iris is a perennial herbaceous plant with a rhizome that reaches heights of 15 to 30, rarely up to 40 centimeters. The stem is on average compressed, pithy, upright, not very branched, double-edged and much shorter than the leaves. The parallel- veined leaves are 35 to 100 centimeters long and 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters wide and lie flat on the ground after the flowering period. They are two-line, equestrian, and grassy.
The one or two flowers smell sweet like fruit. The plate of the hanging leaves is short, veined white and purple, the nail is much longer and wider. The standards are purple, 2.5 to 4 inches long and 0.5 inches wide.
The variety Iris graminea var. Pseudocyperus has odorless flowers and is larger.
Flowering time is in May, partly also in June.
The number of chromosomes is n = 17.
Occurrence
This species occurs from northern Spain and southern France to the Balkans, western Ukraine and southern central Europe in semi-arid grassland and light bushes. In Germany it is considered a naturalized neophyte .
