Grashoff on the Contrescarpe

Since 1872, Grashoff has been a wine and delicatessen store , a delicatessen wholesaler and a bistro as a gourmet restaurant in the fourth generation of the family business in Bremen - Mitte on Loriotplatz / Hillmannplatz .

history

Brüne Grashoff (* 1836) from Achim , who was naturalized in Bremen in 1872, opened the B. Grashoff delicatessen shop in Bremen in the old town at bowl number 23 in the same year . The good location in the Schöttelkorb between Domshof and Sögestraße favored a positive development of the store. Even before that, in 1854, the Grashoffs had a concession for an inn, the long-standing Gasthaus Niedersachsen - Altes Brauhaus . A street in Achim was therefore named Grashofstraße . The Grashoff'schen Delicatessen-Handlung in Bremen managed to become a supplier to important restaurants and customers. In December 1872, a kitchen was also set up for the out-of-home business.

Since the founder Grashoff had no heirs, Johann Georg Schmidt († 1928) took over the house under the name of B. Grashoff Successor in 1900 . After his death in the 1930s, in addition to his wife, her son Helmut Schmidt († 1978) and his wife Else took over the management.

At the beginning of the 1960s, after his training and further training in Paris, the son of the third Schmidt generation, Jürgen D. Schmidt, entered the business. Since the building in the bowl basket was to be demolished in 1965, the Grashoff company relocated to Sögestraße 54. The range was expanded and products, including jams, sauces and pasta, were sold and distributed under the proper name.

In 1968 a small bistro was set up in the back of the business premises , offering French cuisine. In the early 1970s, Jürgen D. Schmidt and his wife Barbara took over the management of the house. In 1980, Le Bistro was awarded one star in the Michelin Guide restaurant guide for “very good cuisine that deserves the reader's attention”. The Gault Millau awarded 16 out of 20 points and the VIF gourmet journal in 1997 then 15 out of 20 points.

Prominent visitors included Loriot , Rudi Carrell , editor-in-chief Klaus Bresser , the authors Gert von Paczensky and Wolfram Siebeck and the businessman Uwe Hollweg, as well as the stage magician Uri Geller and the cabaret artist and comedian Jürgen von Manger . Long-time chef was Rüdiger König, who died in a plane crash in 2006. Christian Wichtrup became his successor.

In 1985 the Grashoff house moved from Sögestraße to Contrescarpe on Hillmannplatz . The shop, bistro and kitchen were enlarged according to plans by the architect Bernd Müller, Bremen. The bistro is tightly furnished in French style with 30 seats. On the walls there are melancholy and ironic photographs by Jürgen Schmidt and drawings by various artists staying in the bistro. In 1996, son Oliver Schmidt became a partner in the house. In 2002 the bistro came under fire from a report in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . After more than 20 years, Grashoff lost its star from the Michelin Guide in 2003, while the Gault-Millau continued to give the bistro a high rating.

Oliver Schmidt and his wife Elke Schmidt have been managing directors of the Grashoff since 2004, but parents Barbara and Jürgen are still active together with Elke and Oliver Schmidt.

Jürgen Dewet Schmidt was mostly represented by photos but also by texts in various works together with Gert von Paczensky , Hermann Gutmann and Karl-Heinz Wocker , among others .

Since Victor von Bülow, known as Loriot - with the Schmidts on friendly terms - stayed at the Grashoff very often, part of Hillmannplatz was named after him in 2012.

In the 2014 Gerolsteiner restaurant list , the bistro was awarded the top spot for the state of Bremen.
