The Grateful Dead - band leader Jerry Garcia and mandolin player David Grisman had known each other since the early 1960s and have always individually or worked in projects such. B. the dead album American Beauty . The first and only band project was the band Old and in the Way in 1973 , but the band only lasted a year and Garcia and Grisman largely diverged. Garcia was the bandleader of the Grateful Dead until his death in 1995, and Grisman worked to build his reputation for being the best mandolin player in the world. It was not until 1991 that they began to record albums together again and put together six albums by Garcia's death, some of which were only released later.

While Garcia was still alive, the idea of the documentary was developed by Grisman's daughter Gillian Grisman, who filmed this and these recordings whenever Garcia and her father were together to rehearse, to play at concerts or just to talk later also used for the documentary film.

The concert recordings are largely from two concerts. One dated December 18, 1990 at the Sweetwater Saloon in Mill Valley , California and the other dated December 17, 1991 at the Warfield Theater , San Francisco . In addition to the concert material and the private recordings of Garcia and Grisman, interviews with friends and former employees were used, whereby it is noticeable that none of the former Grateful Dead members can be seen, but Garcia's last wife and the son of Bill Kreutzmann Justin Kreutzmann, both also directors. This is mainly due to the fact that Gillian Grisman said that she didn't have time to bring in every single one of the Grateful Dead and therefore only wanted to focus on Jerry Garcia himself. Plus, she just didn't like what the Deads stood for.

Musically, the common musical assets of the two musicians can be assigned to the genres folk and bluegrass with influences from jazz .

Reviews

“Grisman's daughter takes the unusual friendship between the guitarist of the cult band" Grateful Dead "Jerry Garcia and the mandolin and banjo virtuoso David Grisman as an opportunity to create a lovingly assembled homage to the country and folk music of the American west coast. Less of an investigative documentary than a document about a duo that shaped American music history for decades. "
