Graubünden marathon
The Graubünden Marathon was a marathon in the Swiss canton of Graubünden .
It was organized by the Lenzerheide-Valbella tourist office from 2003 to 2014 , always took place at the end of June and was considered the toughest mountain marathon in Europe over the classic distance of 42.195 km, as a total of 2682 meters of uphill and 402 meters of downhill had to be overcome. You started in the summery green Chur, slowly worked your way up through forests and past spring-like flowering meadows and ended the run in the increasingly wintry regions of rock and ice on the Parpaner Rothorn at an altitude of 2,865 meters. Since the beginning of the event, an 11.5 km long mountain run called the Rothorn Run has been held on the last steep section from Lenzerheide to Parpaner Rothorn . Since 2006, a 20 miles run (actually 30.7 km) has taken place on the first section of the route , for which runners who were originally registered for the marathon route could also classify when they crossed the finish line in Lenzerheide.
Route
The start was at an altitude of 585 m in Chur . In the first 17 kilometers, the route via Churwalden reached the first apex at Foppa at 1754 m. In the further course to Parpan and Lenzerheide , the route lost about 300 meters in altitude after a counter climb of about 100 meters.
On the last 11.5 kilometers from Lenzerheide to the Parpaner Rothorn, she then climbed another 1,414 meters in altitude before reaching the destination at 2,865 meters.
history
Until 2002 the Danis mountain run took place in Lenzerheide every year . In 2003, the same event team organized the Graubünden Marathon for the first time.
At the first edition of this run in 2003, an altitude difference of 2,727 meters had to be overcome. In the first year this extreme event was able to attract 347 participants despite the difficult route. The dropout rate was quite moderate at 5%. The first winner was the British mountain runner Martin Cox in 3:37:12 h, while Katrin Kläsi was able to win in 4:18:32 h.
In 2004 the organizers had to struggle with the problem that there were still huge snow fields in the upper mountain region. Thanks to the help of the Swiss Army , the upper section of the route could also be made walkable. Some changes to the route meant that instead of the 2727 vertical meters, only 2680 vertical meters had to be overcome. Despite the difficult and very steep snow fields in the upper part, the mountain running world champion Jonathan Wyatt from New Zealand was able to set the course record that still exists today in 3:18:57 h. Carolina Reiber set the current course record for women in 4:04:51 h.
In 2005 the snow didn't cause any problems. This year, however, with very hot weather at the beginning, a violent mountain thunderstorm came in towards the end, into which the rear field got into. Because of the dangers involved, a number of participants had to be withdrawn from the race. Jonathan Wyatt brought home the victory for the second time in 3:24:55 h. Jasmin Nunige won the women in 4:21:23 h.
In 2006 it was very warm and sunny, but the weather remained stable. The favorites also struggled with the heat. The winning times of Jonathan Wyatt with 3:36:02 h and Rita Born with 4:31:41 h were significantly higher than the previous year's winner times.
In 2013 the marathon had to be run on a shortened course (40 km) due to the weather and the course did not lead to the summit.
The Graubünden Marathon took place for the last time in 2014 and was discontinued due to vacancies in the organizing committee.
