The moths reach a wingspan of 23 to 27 millimeters. There is no sexual dimorphism between the sexes in terms of color , but only the males show a rudimentary third pair of wings, the so-called root lobes. Occasionally there are specimens with completely black forewings, which are known as f. nigra Warnecke . The upper side of the hind wing is colored whitish, slightly darkened towards the hem. A relatively large, whitish third pair of wings arises at the root of the hind wings, which reaches approximately half the hind wings length, rests on the hind wings in the rest position and is then completely covered by the forewings.
