Green Line D to Riverside

The Green Line "C" or Beacon Street Branch or Cleveland Circle Branch is a subway tram and a branch of the MBTA - Green Line in the area around Boston in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . On this route, light rail vehicles operate on a route that is partially free of intersections in the middle of Beacon Street . The line runs in the direction of travel Boston North Station from the station Kenmore on the same tracks as the Green Line B and Green Line D . At the other end of the route, the route ends at Cleveland Circle , which is connected to the Green Line D Reservoir station by a footbridge . The Green Line B station on Chestnut Hill Avenue can also be reached on foot. The route runs underground through the Boylston Street Subway and Tremont Street Subway tunnels .

Traffic management

The Green Line C tracks have their own lane, but there are many intersections with roads.

The Green Line C tracks are on their own lane in the middle of Beacon Street in Brookline , but there are a total of 18 intersections with road traffic. The rail vehicles must stop at these points and follow the instructions of the signal systems. The signal circuit along Beacon Street could theoretically be optimized and the speed of the line significantly increased, but the MBTA , which would have to pay for the new technical system required for this , does not see this project as economically viable. In 2007, the Boston Globe published letters to the editor from passengers who were in favor of installing new sensors on the route, a reply from the MBTA, which initially advocated data collection as part of a study, and another letter to the editor in which the MBTA said Escaping in excuses was accused.

In January 2008, the MBTA hired a consultant to investigate the case. In 2011 the City of Brookline considered formally soliciting the MBTA to improve signaling to speed up the Green Line's trains on Beacon Street .

history

The St. Mary's Street Portal connects the Green Line C with the Boylston Street Subway tunnel.

The first tracks on Beacon Street were laid in 1888 and stretched west from Massachusetts Avenue to Coolidge Corner in Cambridge . The following year, the remainder of the route to Cleveland Circle in Boston was opened. In 1889, the first electric tram, Green Line A , was scheduled to run on Beacon Street from Coolidge Corner eastward to Massachusetts Avenue and from there south on Boylston Street to Park Square . In the same year the track was electrified on Beacon Street to Cleveland Circle .

Another link to the Beacon Street line was established at the Washington Square station so that streetcars from Brookline Village could travel along Washington Street and then turn west on Beacon Street . This line was later extended north on Chestnut Hill Avenue and west on Commonwealth Avenue to Boston College Station . Today this route is served by the MBTA bus route 65 .

On September 1, 1897, the Tremont Street Subway tunnel was opened and offered the Green Line C the opportunity to go underground via the Boylston Street Portal at the Boston Public Garden and turn around at Park Street station . On October 3, 1914, the Boylston Street Subway extended the underground route to Kenmore Square , and finally, from October 23, 1932, the Kenmore subway station could also be served. Today's route was initially numbered 61 before it was renamed Green Line C in 1967 .

The line was extended from Park Street to Lechmere on February 7, 1931 . Since then the eastern terminus has been changed several times:

  • November 20, 1961: Shortening of the line to North Station , only on Sundays to Lechmere .
  • March 25, 1967: Extension of the line to Lechmere at any time.
  • June to September 1968: On Sundays shortening to Government Center Sundays, then again to Lechmere at any time
  • March 21, 1980: Shortening to Government Center except during rush hour .
  • June 21, 1980: Expansion to Lechmere at any time.
  • April 4, 1981: Shortening to Park Street .
  • June 26, 1982: Extension to the Government Center .
  • July 30, 1983: Extension to North Station .
  • March 28, 1997: Shortening to the Government Center .
  • January 1, 2005: Extension to North Station .

As of 2011, the Green Line C ends at the North Station .
