Green River, UT (2006) |
Green River is a town in the US state of Utah on the banks of the Green River . In 2006 the community had 947 inhabitants.
history
The place Green River was created by the fact that the American Post used a ferry here since 1876 to transport mail across the Green River. But this was also used by farmers for the trade in cattle and also by the settlers' treks, which at that time moved west.
In 1883 the railway came to the place, which at that time consisted of 3 families. Originally these 3 families came here to farm and operate the ferry on the fertile banks of the Green River. A larger tent city of the railway workers, who were working on a bridge over the Green River and on the expansion of the railway line, quickly emerged. The place became a supply point for the railroad, to service the locomotives and as an overnight stop for travelers.
Today the place has an important position due to its location on Interstate I-70 , as a place for a refueling stop or rest in the middle of the desert. There are several gas stations, a KOA campground and several motels. There is also a small airfield and a connection to the Amtrak passenger transport network.
Green River Test Site
In 1964, the Green River Test Site was built in a large area in the desert near the small, then very depopulated place . From 1964 to 1973 the US Air Force launched 141 Athena research missiles here.
The Air Force Base is now decommissioned and accessible to civilians. You can still enter the launch pad and bunker in the middle of the desert.
Most important of all is a cold water geyser , the so-called Chrystal Geyser on the banks of the Green River, about 8 km downstream from the village of Green River. This shoots a sulfur-containing water fountain into the air at irregular intervals.
