Gregory Donovan Ostertag (born March 6, 1973 in Dallas , Texas ) is a retired American basketball player . In his ten-year professional career, the 2.18 meter tall center played with the Utah Jazz and Sacramento Kings in the NBA . During his career, Ostertag was considered one of the best shot blockers in the league.

Career

After attending Duncanville High School in Texas , Ostertag moved to the University of Kansas . After four years for the Jayhawks , Ostertag was selected in the 1995 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz in the first round in 28th place. It quickly established itself as the starting center of jazz and reached the NBA finals in 1997 and 1998. However, the jazz failed both times on the Chicago Bulls around Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen . Ostertag showed a good defense against dominant centers like Shaquille O'Neal or Hakeem Olajuwon during these years , but was generally considered to be a very limited center offensive.

In 2004 Ostertag moved to the Sacramento Kings as a free agent , but was transferred back to jazz in 2005. After a season for jazz, Ostertag ended his career in 2006. In his NBA career, Ostertag averaged 4.4 points; 5.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game.

In December 2011, Ostertag announced that he had signed a contract with the Texas Legends from the NBA Development League and that he would try to start playing basketball again. Due to a knee injury, however, he only ran for ten games for the Legends.

Private

In 2002, Ostertag donated a kidney to his sister Amy Hall . He was the first player in NBA history to donate an organ and return to professional sport. Since then, Ostertag has been committed to organ donation.
