Gregory Sestero (born July 15, 1978 ) is an American actor, writer, producer and model. He gained fame through the role of Mark in the film The Room , which is described by many critics as the worst film of all time and thus has reached cult status. In 2013 he published a book describing his memories of working with fellow actor Tommy Wiseau in The Room . This book was filmed in 2017 by James Franco under the title The Disaster Artist .

Early life

Sestero was born in Walnut Creek, California . His mother is of French and Sicilian descent. He spent his childhood in Danville, California , where he also attended high school.

At the age of twelve he wrote a sequel to the then current film Kevin - Alone at Home . He sent this script to John Hughes , who thanked him in a letter of reply but also informed that he was not planning a sequel at the moment.

He began working as a model in high school, working for Giorgio Armani and Gianfranco Ferré in Paris and Milan .

Acting career

Sestero's early roles consisted of small supporting and extra roles in films such as Gattaca or Nash Bridges . In 1999 he played the lead role in the direct-to-video - film Retro Puppet Master.

The room

His best-known role to date is that of Mark in Tommy Wiseau 's independent film The Room from 2003 . Sestero met Wiseau in 1998 in an acting class. Wiseau told Sestero that he would have him co-star in his planned film once he got the production costs together. However, Sestero was only willing to work behind the scenes and help Wiseau with production and casting . Wiseau was so convinced of his idea to let Sestero play the role of Mark that he fired the actor who was actually cast for it.

Sestero later said that he ultimately only starred in Wiseau's film because he believed that no one would ever see the film and that it would only be released on video. Wiseau released the finished drama in two Los Angeles cinemas . Immediately after its release, it received very negative reviews and grossed less than $ 1,000 for the $ 6,000,000 film. In his book, Sestero wrote that Wiseau sent the film to Paramount Pictures for a wider release. The normal time for a response from the production company is around 2 weeks. Wiseau received his rejection within 24 hours.

Despite or because of the bad reviews, The Room quickly gained a large fan base, which has resulted in the film still receiving international screenings in some cinemas today, more than 10 years after its release. At these midnight performances, the fans sometimes disguise themselves as characters from the film and interact with the events on the screen for the entire duration of the performance, similar to the film The Rocky Horror Picture Show . Sestero is personally present at many of these cinema screenings and gives autographs, answers questions or reads from his book.

The disaster artist

In June 2011 it was announced that Sestero had signed a contract with Simon & Schuster and was working on a book about his experiences filming The Room . The book, titled The Disaster Artist , was published in October 2013.

In February 2014, Seth Rogen's production company Point Gray Pictures acquired the film rights to Sestero's book. Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber were announced as screenwriters on September 8, 2014, and Dave Franco was announced as Greg Sestero on October 15, 2015 . In the USA, The Disaster Artist opened in cinemas on December 8, 2017, and the German premiere was on February 1, 2018.
