The FC Gretna (officially: Gretna Football Club ) - founded in 1946 - was a professional football club from Gretna , Scotland . In 2002 the club was included in the Scottish Football League Third Division , the fourth Scottish professional league, as a place had become vacant due to the de facto merger of FC Clydebank and Airdrie United (successor to the bankrupt Airdrieonians FC ). After 6th place in the first year and 3rd place in the second, the march through to the Scottish Premier League succeeded in the following seasons. The club had already made its debut in the European Cup a year earlier , as the final of the Scottish FA Cup had been sensationally reached. As a third division team, Gretna was able to eliminate four clubs from the 2nd division, the Scottish First Division , with FC St. Johnstone , FC Clyde , FC St. Mirren and FC Dundee , before the final against Heart of Midlothian after a big fight in the Penalty shootout was lost. In the UEFA Cup qualification Gretna failed with 1: 5 and 2: 2 at the start against the Irish representative Derry City . Gretna traditionally played its home games in Raydale Park , which officially has 2,200 seats and almost as many spectators as Gretna's inhabitants (approx. 2,700). In the Scottish Premier League, however, the "village club" moved to Fir Park from Motherwell .

insolvency

Due to financial irregularities, Gretna was deducted ten points in 2007/08. After the season, the Scottish Football League decided that Gretna would be transferred to the Third Division due to bankruptcy .

On June 3, 2008, the club drew the consequences of the financial misery and stepped out of the Scottish soccer league SFL and was finally dissolved on August 8.

New start as Gretna Football Club in 2008

Even before the club was dissolved, supporters of the club founded a new club on July 2, 2008, Gretna Football Club 2008 , mostly Gretna 2008 for short , which has no legal ties to the original club, but sees itself in the tradition of the same.
